Dr. Doyle’s Chiro Tools

Posted on 04.25.19 |

chiro appointment with chiro tools used to naturally relieve painDr. Doyle, your Roanoke TX local chiro, uses blended therapies to help patients manage pain and to promote healing. When you visit our office, the doctor may use one or more of these tools in your treatment.

ArthroStim

This tool helps to remap neurological paths, thus assisting with the relearning of certain movements. It is often used as part of an overall therapeutic process to help patients regain the function of joints and muscles. Many patients also love that it doesn’t make the loud popping noise associated with some other tools.

Muscle Stim

Muscle stim create electrical muscle stimulation. It is perhaps most commonly used for decreasing pain and swelling. When in use, it holds the muscle in contraction and then relaxes it. It may do so for roughly a few seconds at a time, depending on the settings the doctor prefers to use. This helps to break the spasm cycle, which is often the source of chronic or intense pain and stiffness. Muscle stim also activates blood flow to a specific region, which promotes faster healing.

Activator

This is one of the more traditional chiropractor tools that while effective is not often used in Dr. Doyle’s office. The activator adjustment tool transmits a low amount of force into the spine to assist with realignment. While it is different from the ArthroStim, the effect or overall benefit is the same. The ArthroStim just tends to make treatment easier.

Drop Table

Sometimes called the breakaway table, the drop table assists chiropractors with using gravity to the patient’s advantage. The drop table actually relieves gravity, allowing the doctor to send the body into momentary free fall with a sudden stop. This stop mobilizes joints in a different way than a standard adjustment, but has the same effect. Dr. Doyle recommends this especially for patients who are in too much pain to tolerate side posture adjustments, because it does not put stress on additional muscles the way a side posture adjustment may do.

Microcurrent

Also known as frequent specific microcurrent, this tool uses micro-amperage current to treat pain. Because there are other effective tools available, Dr. Doyle does not use this at his office.

Ultrasound

Another tool not used at Dr. Doyle’s office is the ultrasound. Chiropractors use this to create sound waves that radiate heat into the joints and soft tissues. This provides a micro-massage that reduces back stiffness, muscle soreness, and other symptoms.

The Massager

An actual massager is more commonly used at this Roanoke TX local chiro office and has very much the same effects as micro-massage. It provides stimulus to the central nervous system, which helps to repattern chronic issues. Therapeutic benefits also include working out soreness and increasing circulation. However, the number one reason patients enjoy this tool is because it feels great.

Acupuncture Needles

Some patients respond best to acupuncture. Professionals often use electrical currents to add further stimulation during the process, but Dr. Doyle practices a more Japanese style of acupuncture. The effectiveness of this procedure relies less on stimulation and more on the needles and their positions. Acupuncture and chiropractic adjustment may be the best treatment for some patients.

When it comes to pain management, potentially addictive medications are not the only option. Chiropractic care and acupuncture may provide long-term relief without the risks. For more information about your Roanoke TX local chiro, contact Dr. Doyle at 817-767-5430. Your pain-free days may be only a phone call away.

Research Shows Acupuncture Eases Body Pain, Headaches, and Osteoarthritis

Your CHiropractor in Roanoke, TX offer Acupuncture Care for Pain ReliefFor years, chiropractors have known the benefits of holistic medicine in helping patients find relief from pain. But today, more and more conventional medical experts are turning to complementary therapies to build a more comprehensive pain management plan for patients dealing with chronic pain. The timing couldn’t be better; chronic pain is becoming an epidemic that more needs innovative solutions. Back in 2012, a survey led by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) discovered that nearly 26 million U.S. adults — or 11.2 percent — had been in pain every day for the preceding three months, and nearly 40 million experienced severe pain — and those numbers are estimated to have grown substantially since then.Read More >

20% of Americans Suffer from Chronic Pain – It’s Time to Find Relief

Posted on 03.5.19 |

chronic pain in back depicted with spine and barbed wirePeople who feel good take a lot for granted. Approximately 50 million US adults experience chronic pain, which is pain that lasts more than three months. The pain can be nagging, mild, or more severe. In 2016, a report by the National Health Institute found that 20% of chronic pain patients endure high impact chronic pain (HICP). With HICP, a person cannot perform daily activities without experiencing pain, so quality of life is significantly impaired.

The National Institute of Health estimates that 83% of HICP patients cannot work, and they have much higher health costs than the average person. On medical care, programs, and lost production, about $560 billion is lost annually in our country because of chronic pain.

For people with HICP, simple activities, like doing the laundry, shopping at the mall, gardening, cooking, or even going out to eat may be painful. This same population is prone to a higher incidence of anxiety, depression, cognitive challenges, and fatigue.

Who wants to go shopping when you’re depressed, foggy-headed, tired, and hurting?

Treatment Options for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can be related to an injury, a health condition, or an unknown source. Treatment may include any combination of the following.

  1. Taking pressure off damaged joints, including those of the spine, can help reduce pain in some situations. Pressure reduction can include weight loss and/or lightened activity.
  2. Exercise can strengthen muscles and release positive hormones that help us feel better. Regular exercise for at least 30 minutes, 3-7 times per week is the best practice. For low impact, try water aerobics, yoga, or Tai Chi.
  3. A doctor may suggest over-the-counter analgesics like aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like naproxen, acetaminophen, ibuprofen. Using NSAIDs long-term can create complications in the digestive system, as well as kidney and heart problems.
  4. Heat and cold therapy are effective for some patients.
  5. Medications known as topical analgesics, including brands such as Aspercreme, Tiger Balm, and Icy Hot, can provide temporary relief in the area of pain, for some patients.
  6. A personal TENS unit, properly used, may temporarily reduce or alleviate pain.
  7. For the spine, traction may help reduce pain. Some chiropractors and physicians offer this treatment in- office.
  8. Physical therapy remains an extremely common recommendation by doctors for patients with chronic pain. Improving range of motion and strengthening the core will redistribute some of the weight put on the spine. A PT may also recommend stretching exercises to practice at home, ice and heat therapy, or massage.
  9. If these treatments are not effective, a pain management doctor may prescribe a narcotic, such an opioid, for short-term use. These include hydrocodone, codeine, oxycodone, and morphine. They are highly addictive and tolerance can build up, making the patient require a higher dosage to maintain similar results. Opioid addiction is a serious problem in the United States, so consider alternatives if possible.
  10. The doctor may add an anticonvulsant, like gabapentin, to your medications to treat radicular pain.
  11. Antidepressants like serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors can help relieve some cases of chronic pain in the back.
  12. A muscle relaxant can resolve muscle spasms related to an area of pain, such as muscles that surround a degenerative disc.
  13. Steroid injections are often suggested, orally for 7-10 days or by injection at the site of the pain source. These offer temporary relief, ranging from weeks to months, depending upon the patient.
  14. Acupuncture targets meridians in the body, found along the nerve pathways. The practice is usually comfortable, and it stimulates blood flow while also signaling the release of endorphins.
  15. Chiropractic therapy involves skeletal manipulation to bring balance back to the underlying support of the body. Oftentimes, a chiropractor can effectively relieve a patient’s pain, without using narcotics.

Non-Invasive, Effective HICP Treatment with Chiropractic Acupuncture

TESTIMONIAL

“My pain management doctor recommended spinal and AI joint injections for my leg pain. Before undergoing the procedure, and because I knew that any relief the cortisone provided would be short-lived, I opted to visit Dr. Doyle. He has  my chiropractor and acupuncturist for a few years, for other issues. This is hard to believe, but In one visit – just one visit! – my leg pain was relieved. Praise God and thanks to Dr. Doyle. I literally hobbled into the office in pain and walked out, after chiropractic and acupuncture appointment.”

Shedding Some Light on Popular Acupuncture Myths

Posted on 02.14.19 |

Shedding some light on acupuncture myths in Argyle, TX

Acupuncture has its roots in early Chinese medicine (some scholars believe it began as far back as 480 B.C). Throughout acupuncture’s long history, and as Western culture began adopting this complementary therapy, certain myths began circulating. You’ve probably heard of, or even believe, a few of these myths! But myths about this treatment can discourage some Argyle, TX, patients who may truly benefit from this therapy’s pain management benefits. Today, we’re busting a few of the most popular myths about acupuncture and its effects. Read on to learn more!

Dr. Cody Doyle offers acupuncture therapy as part of his holistic approach to alternative medicine. Recently, more and more research is showing acupuncture’s effects in treating inflammation, chronic and acute pain, and other musculoskeletal issues. If you are interested in acupuncture treatment, it’s important to see a trained and experienced practitioner like Dr. Cody Doyle. Call our practice now to schedule an appointment and see for yourself the truth about acupuncture.

Acupuncture hurts.

Many people have a fear of needles, and acupuncture’s use of needles may prompt a fear that the therapy is painful or invasive. However, the needles used during acupuncture therapy are extremely thin—usually just slightly thicker than a human hair. Most patients experience a mild “aching” sensation during treatment, or sometimes a slight “shock” feeling. Dr. Doyle may slightly manipulate the needles during treatment to increase their stimulation effects, but once the needles are removed, many patients experience a feeling of relaxation and pain relief, though other patients with more intense pain may require additional treatments for full pain relief benefits. It’s not uncommon for some patients to even fall asleep during treatment, because the process can be a very relaxing and calming experience.

Acupuncture is outdated.

While acupuncture has ancient roots, it is more and more being research and studied as a modern solution for different painful side effects and symptoms of medical conditions like cancer, arthritis, TMJ disorders, digestive disorders, and more. A 2012 study of over 18,000 participants found that acupuncture was effective in offering pain relief for chronic pain sufferers. The National Institutes of Health also reports that while the positive effects of acupuncture have been verified, the depth of understanding in regards to acupuncture is only just beginning. More research could help us understand the full power of this alternative therapy.

Acupuncture offers a placebo effect.

The ancient practice of acupuncture started to help the body regulate its flow of energy, referred to in Chinese medicine as qi. Today, that idea still guides many practitioners of acupuncture, though we now can explain the effects of acupuncture in more modern terminology.

It’s thought that the reason acupuncture is effective for pain relief is because it stimulates nerves throughout the body. The nerves then trigger a response for the brain to release hormones such as beta-endorphins, which can increase the body’s pain threshold.

Another theory that researchers are studying is acupuncture’s ability to help stimulate nerve re-growth and repair in painful areas of the body. The stimulation of acupuncture therapy helps nerve endings to regenerate and reduces their sensitivity to pain.

As linked above, the study of acupuncture has proven its ability to effectively reduce painful symptoms for patients, but the understanding as to why this occurs is still under much research.

4 Common Causes of Arm Pain

Posted on 01.16.19 |

man experiencing arm pain

Achy elbows, tight wrists, and skin irritations are just a few of a maladies that can get in the way of your tennis swing and day-to-day activities. Many of the causes of arm pain have treatment options available at Dr. Cody Doyle’s chiropractic care office in Roanoke, TX. To schedule an exploratory exam, contact Dr. Doyle at (817) 767-5430.

Common Causes of Arm Pain and Recommended Treatments

Arthritis

Arthritis, characterized by inflammation of the joints, afflicts tens of millions of Americans. The autoimmune disease commonly falls into two categories: degenerative and inflammatory. Degenerative arthritis, sometimes referred to as osteoarthritis, affects over 25 million Americans. The chronic joint condition is often associated with aging and can lead to pain, swelling, and stiffness in shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingers. Inflammatory arthritis, also known as rheumatoid arthritis, is commonly associated with other forms of diseases, such as lupus and psoriatic arthritis, and can be debilitating in its advanced states.

Both forms of arthritis, while not curable, can be managed with medication and holistic methods like chiropractic care and acupuncture.

An article published by the Arthritis Foundation described the potential benefits of acupuncture for treating arthritis. In fact, over 50 percent of patients with osteoarthritis enjoy some benefit from acupuncture treatments. Best of all, there are no harmful side effects to acupuncture, unlike prescription pain medication.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Are you experiencing throbbing pain, tingling sensations, skin sensitivity, or other forms of pain?

The discomfort may be the result of peripheral neuropathy, a condition that affects the nervous systems of over 20 million people in the United States. The condition disrupts communication from the peripheral nerves to the central nervous system and to the rest of the body.

Dr. Doyle has over 20 years of experience reducing the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. The pain may be the result of nutrient deficiencies or toxins. Detoxification may be one treatment option. Other remedies, depending on your diagnosis, may include premodulated muscle stimulation (strategic electrical stimulation), chiropractic care, ultrasound, or acupuncture. The staff at Doyle Chiropractic & Acupuncture will monitor your progress and recommend follow-up procedures as needed.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis, or the inflammation of a tendon, can cause severe discomfort and pain as well as limiting arm movement. Tendinitis may be the result of an injury or repetition of a specific movement. Hence, many forms of tendinitis are euphemistically called “tennis elbow” or “pitcher’s shoulder.” The ailment can often be cured with physical therapy, pain treatments, and avoidance of repetitive movements. Dr. Doyle will be glad to diagnose and offer treatment options for this form of injury.

Misaligned Vertebrae

Bulging disks, misaligned vertebrae, and other causes of disk-related pain can cause a wide range of symptoms, including pain in the outer extremities. Fortunately, there are several treatment options for people suffering from spinal injuries.

The common spinal manipulation methods performed at Doyle Chiropractic & Acupuncture include: diversified method (hand-applied pressure), activator method (mechanical manipulation using handheld device), Thompson method (manual thrusts with drop table technique), and Gonstead Method (similar to diversified but using a variety of tables, positions, and manual thrusts).

Is Pain Management Possible Without More Pills?

Posted on 01.3.19 |

Do you have chronic pain but dislike the idea of getting yet another monthly prescription? If you want to avoid adding more pills to your daily regimen of medications, why not consider the value of chiropractic for pain management? Many individuals have found that regular visits to a chiropractor help manage their pain without the need for more medications. Contact Dr. Cody Doyle in Roanoke, TX by calling (817) 767-5430 to schedule a visit and discuss pill-free pain management treatment options including chiropractic care and acupuncture treatments.

Why Choose Holistic Pain Management?

Patients who have recurring bouts of pain often seek alternative pain management options to increasing their reliance on medicines. There are many reasons for not wanting to add more medications to someone’s daily dosage of pills, including:

  • Worries about tolerance: Certain pain medications lose their effectiveness over time. To combat this fact, patients need to increase their dosages, which can lead to other issues. In some cases, prescriptions may completely lose their effectiveness, meaning a patient has to switch to another pharmaceutical.
  • Worries about dependence: Many individuals are very concerned about the possibility of becoming dependent on painkillers. This is especially true for those who have already shown signs of addictive tendencies, or who have overcome a substance addiction.
  • Worries about cost: Medications can be costly, especially for individuals on a fixed income or whose healthcare plans prefer to pay for other types of treatments, such as chiropractic care.
  • Worries about contraindications: Every time a new medicine is added to an individual’s daily intake, it may lead to sometimes unpleasant or even potentially fatal contraindications with other medications.
  • Worries about mobility and independence: Certain painkillers make it difficult for patients to safely operate machinery or even drive a vehicle. Patients may be concerned about losing their freedom or ability to keep jobs they love.
  • Worries about general health: Our society has moved toward more holistic approaches to medicine. Taking more pills may be counterintuitive to the holistic healthcare preferred by some patients.
  • Worries about unwanted side effects: Some painkillers have unpleasant side effects, such as increasing the risk of depression, changes in appetite, difficulty sleeping, or lowered libido. Patients may want to consider non-medication forms of pain management to avoid these side effects.

These are all strong reasons for patients to talk with a chiropractor about natural pain management.

How Chiropractic Pain Management Works

Pain management through specifically designed chiropractic and acupuncture treatments involves using diagnostic tools and evaluations to understand the root source of the pain. Dr. Doyle will complete a comprehensive patient examination and then present a pain management treatment plan. The treatment plan will be customized to help the body heal itself and promote lowered pain.

In addition to in-office treatments, Dr. Doyle may also recommend that a patient with chronic pain make behavioral changes such as losing weight, eating anti-inflammatory foods, and performing certain exercises at home. Regardless if the pain stems from an injury, arthritis, or another cause, Dr. Doyle will help minimize discomfort using his 20 years of knowledge and experience. The goal for all patients is a reduction in their daily pain, and an improvement in their peace of mind and quality of life.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture treatments have many theories behind their efficacy. In the ancient Chinese tradition, practitioners believe that acupuncture/acupressure points on the body stimulate and redirect the flow of energy (qi). While there is little scientific data to support this theory, there is evidence that acupuncture does something to stimulate circulation and nerve pathways and help improve musculoskeletal function.

While other practitioners may provide acupuncture to treat specific conditions or break bad habits (such as smoking)—Dr. Doyle only provides acupuncture and auriculotherapy to treat dysfunction in very specific points within your musculoskeletal tissues.

If you suffer from one of the following conditions, Dr. Doyle may suggest acupuncture as part of a more comprehensive treatment plan.

  • Neck and back pain
  • Asthma, allergies, and sinusitis symptoms
  • Migraines and headaches
  • TMJ disorder
  • Muscle spasms and pain
  • Arthritis symptoms
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Lower or upper extremity pain
  • Stress and anxiety symptoms
  • Digestive symptoms (musculoskeletal component)

Do Insurers Cover Acupuncture and other Complementary Therapies?

Today, many insurers will cover chiropractic care, but what about acupuncture, myofascial release therapy, or ultrasound therapy? If you are living with pain and dysfunction it may seem unfair to have your reimbursement requests denied, when all you are trying to do is find a way to be well again!

The truth is that more and more insurers are covering what’s referred to as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). This can include a number of treatments offered by complementary medical practitioners, such as Dr. Cody Doyle.

However, this doesn’t mean you will automatically be reimbursed for treatments you seek out on your own. Insurers often need evidence that your treatments are medically necessary. If you are in a situation in which you have been seeing a doctor regularly for a condition, (but your pain and dysfunction are still a problem) you may need to get your primary care doctor to “prescribe” CAM therapies before they will be covered. When patients have been suggested to have CAM therapies, they tend to have their claims approved more frequently.

Conditions that May Respond to Complementary Alternative Medicine

Dr. Cody Doyle has been practicing chiropractic and complementary medicine for approximately two decades. In that time, he has treated patients for many diverse conditions. These range from age-related degenerative arthritis and spinal problems to immune system disorders and neuropathy.

Some of the more common conditions Dr. Doyle treats include:

  • Arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal disc issues
  • Tendonitis
  • Musculoskeletal dysfunction
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Immune disorders and allergies

Are You Dreaming of a Pain-Free Life?

Posted on 09.20.18 |

Argyle TX chiropractorArgyle TX Chiropractor Cody Doyle May Have Solutions

Have you endured multiple medical treatments or surgeries that haven’t adequately addressed your pain problem? If so, you are not alone. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) more than 25 million Americans live with chronic pain. That’s roughly 11 percent of us. They also found that patients who experience the worst pain tend to have worse overall health and less medical coverage. It’s easy to understand why—without proper care, your chances of healing are reduced. As for the overall health issue, pain can rob you of your mobility and your drive to be active. How can anyone expect patients to stay active and maintain good health when it hurts just to move?

If you’re at a dead end with your pain management, visit Argyle TX chiropractor Dr. Cody Doyle. Standard medical interventions don’t work for everyone; Dr. Doyle may be able to help you heal your condition and live an active, pain-free life. Contact us today to make an appointment.

How Do Complementary Therapies Work?

If you’ve never visited a chiropractor before, you may be wondering how a “back doctor” can help you with a knee or shoulder problem. The truth is that chiropractors are more than back doctors; all musculoskeletal function and sensations travel through the spine. If the spine is out of alignment it can block nerve and circulatory pathways. This can make your body less able to heal itself by natural means and cause greater pain. Plus, Dr. Doyle provides much more than just chiropractic care!

The term “complementary therapies” refers to medical techniques not used by mainstream doctors. They are viewed as a complement to standard medical interventions, as they have demonstrated a beneficial effect on many patients. There is a tendency in medical care to fix what’s broken, without looking at how the different parts of the body interact and all play a role in healing. This is changing, of course, as more and more medical doctors see the value in alternative healing techniques. For example, more and more insurance providers are now covering chiropractic, acupuncture, and other alternative treatments for pain. Modern medicine may not understand everything about how these techniques work, but they are slowly coming to understand that they do work!

Chiropractic Treatments

As the nerve superhighway for the body, virtually all sensations and functioning rely on proper alignment of the spine. Your brain and immune system interact with every part of the body via the spine, so misalignment can lead to pain, dysfunction, an impaired ability to heal.

Acupuncture and Auriculotherapy

Pain-free acupuncture treatments can stimulate circulation and healing at specific musculoskeletal points on the body. Many of Dr. Doyle’s patients have used acupuncture to find relief from arthritis, neck and back problems, as well as migraines.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Have you ever reduced your own pain by massaging an area of the body? Myofascial release is not the same thing as massage, but it uses massage and stretching of targeted connective tissues to encourage healing and promote pain relief.

Nutritional Therapy and Supplements

How our bodies function is often based upon what we put into them. Eating foods that contain the right levels of certain minerals and nutrients can give you the ingredients that let the body heal itself. Doctors are already catching on to the value of nutritional and supplement therapy, as many of them now recommend turmeric (a natural anti-inflammatory), garlic (for heart health), as well as many other natural substances not traditionally referred to as “medicines.”

Ultrasound and TENS Treatments

Using high-tech tools, Dr. Doyle can stimulate many parts of the body to reduce inflammation and promote self-healing. Ultrasound waves deliver deep heat to muscles, tendons, joints, and ligaments. Premodulated muscle stimulation (TENS treatment) uses gentle electrical currents to relieve muscle spasms and swelling.

Browse our website to learn more about the many conditions that are treatable with complementary therapies. If doctors have been unable to end your pain thus far, it’s time to try something new. Argyle TX chiropractor Dr. Cody Doyle has helped thousands of patients improve their health and manage their pain. Your turn may be next!
