Drug-Free Pain Management for Sports Injuries

Posted on 05.1.19 |

old golf sports injuriesDo you play golf in Trophy Club, shoot hoops at the park, or jog the beautiful nature trails that crisscross Northeast Tarrant County? Maybe you play volleyball or softball at the rec center. Roanoke, Trophy Club, Southlake, and Grapevine feature a wide variety of outdoor activities to enjoy — and Dr. Doyle hopes you’re taking advantage of them.

Should you twist an ankle or strain a muscle while trying to have fun, you may need to see a doctor. If pain persists, visit Dr. Doyle. Our Roanoke office provides our Trophy Club neighbors with holistic pain management, so you can heal quickly and get back to enjoying the activities you love.

Common Sports Injuries

The most common sports injuries are sprains and strains, but they only scratch the surface of the full list. Other common sports injuries you may experience include:

  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Knee injuries
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations
  • Swollen muscles

Some of our patients continue to have pain long after an injury. For instance, a low back injury sustained during high school sports could plague you with pain and stiffness in adulthood. Dr. Doyle may use chiropractic, acupuncture, or a combination of these with or without muscle stim and other holistic therapies to treat your pain.

Before Dr. Doyle can develop your treatment plan for pain relief, however, he must diagnose the source of your pain. Your initial interview and exam will take about an hour, and at the end of the appointment we will give you a proposed treatment plan. Lori in the front office will file your insurance, if you have chiropractic coverage.

“Does it work?”

We live in a society that questions the validity of holistic medicine. The truth is, you have to try it to find out if chiropractic and/or acupuncture will work well for pain management, for your unique case. Mounting research in both acupuncture and chiropractic prove the effectiveness of the therapies, whether provided separately or together.

“Acute and chronic chiropractic patients experienced better outcomes in pain, functional disability, and patient satisfaction; clinically important differences in pain and disability improvement were found for chronic patients.”

Haas et al (2005), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics

Side Effects of Sports Injuries

The full extent of a sports injury is not always immediately obvious. In addition, some injuries develop over time due to repetitive motions, like passing a football or bending the knees when riding a bike. Holistic pain management treatment can often reduce or alleviate these types of pain, as well.

Not sure if you injured yourself? Some of the symptoms you may experience are:

  • Swelling, inflammation, or tenderness in particular areas
  • Stiffness that limits movement
  • Acute pain when you make certain movements
  • Extreme weakness in the arms or legs
  • Inability to place any weight on a hand or leg

If you experience dizziness, headaches, or disorientation, seek either emergency assistance or to schedule an appointment with your GP. If your symptoms persist after seeing a physician, schedule a visit with Dr. Doyle. His therapies can help reduce or relieve chronic headaches, migraines, and vertigo, in many cases.

Avoid Long-Term Use of Pain Medications

Doctors often recommend ibuprofen or acetaminophen to alleviate pain and swelling. If you’re prescribed an opioid, you might be concerned with the effects that the addictive drug can have on your health and life. Opioids are not the healthiest treatment for ongoing pain. Using ibuprofen long term can also cause health concerns. For many patients, chiropractic treatment and acupuncture provide sufficient pain management so that long-term pain meds are not needed.

For drug-free pain management, call us at 817-767-5430 or submit an email via the contact form. Dr. Doyle and our team look forward to seeing you back on the greens, the courts, the trails, and the fields very soon!

Dr. Doyle’s Chiro Tools

Posted on 04.25.19 |

chiro appointment with chiro tools used to naturally relieve painDr. Doyle, your Roanoke TX local chiro, uses blended therapies to help patients manage pain and to promote healing. When you visit our office, the doctor may use one or more of these tools in your treatment.

ArthroStim

This tool helps to remap neurological paths, thus assisting with the relearning of certain movements. It is often used as part of an overall therapeutic process to help patients regain the function of joints and muscles. Many patients also love that it doesn’t make the loud popping noise associated with some other tools.

Muscle Stim

Muscle stim create electrical muscle stimulation. It is perhaps most commonly used for decreasing pain and swelling. When in use, it holds the muscle in contraction and then relaxes it. It may do so for roughly a few seconds at a time, depending on the settings the doctor prefers to use. This helps to break the spasm cycle, which is often the source of chronic or intense pain and stiffness. Muscle stim also activates blood flow to a specific region, which promotes faster healing.

Activator

This is one of the more traditional chiropractor tools that while effective is not often used in Dr. Doyle’s office. The activator adjustment tool transmits a low amount of force into the spine to assist with realignment. While it is different from the ArthroStim, the effect or overall benefit is the same. The ArthroStim just tends to make treatment easier.

Drop Table

Sometimes called the breakaway table, the drop table assists chiropractors with using gravity to the patient’s advantage. The drop table actually relieves gravity, allowing the doctor to send the body into momentary free fall with a sudden stop. This stop mobilizes joints in a different way than a standard adjustment, but has the same effect. Dr. Doyle recommends this especially for patients who are in too much pain to tolerate side posture adjustments, because it does not put stress on additional muscles the way a side posture adjustment may do.

Microcurrent

Also known as frequent specific microcurrent, this tool uses micro-amperage current to treat pain. Because there are other effective tools available, Dr. Doyle does not use this at his office.

Ultrasound

Another tool not used at Dr. Doyle’s office is the ultrasound. Chiropractors use this to create sound waves that radiate heat into the joints and soft tissues. This provides a micro-massage that reduces back stiffness, muscle soreness, and other symptoms.

The Massager

An actual massager is more commonly used at this Roanoke TX local chiro office and has very much the same effects as micro-massage. It provides stimulus to the central nervous system, which helps to repattern chronic issues. Therapeutic benefits also include working out soreness and increasing circulation. However, the number one reason patients enjoy this tool is because it feels great.

Acupuncture Needles

Some patients respond best to acupuncture. Professionals often use electrical currents to add further stimulation during the process, but Dr. Doyle practices a more Japanese style of acupuncture. The effectiveness of this procedure relies less on stimulation and more on the needles and their positions. Acupuncture and chiropractic adjustment may be the best treatment for some patients.

When it comes to pain management, potentially addictive medications are not the only option. Chiropractic care and acupuncture may provide long-term relief without the risks. For more information about your Roanoke TX local chiro, contact Dr. Doyle at 817-767-5430. Your pain-free days may be only a phone call away.

20% of Americans Suffer from Chronic Pain – It’s Time to Find Relief

Posted on 03.5.19 |

chronic pain in back depicted with spine and barbed wirePeople who feel good take a lot for granted. Approximately 50 million US adults experience chronic pain, which is pain that lasts more than three months. The pain can be nagging, mild, or more severe. In 2016, a report by the National Health Institute found that 20% of chronic pain patients endure high impact chronic pain (HICP). With HICP, a person cannot perform daily activities without experiencing pain, so quality of life is significantly impaired.

The National Institute of Health estimates that 83% of HICP patients cannot work, and they have much higher health costs than the average person. On medical care, programs, and lost production, about $560 billion is lost annually in our country because of chronic pain.

For people with HICP, simple activities, like doing the laundry, shopping at the mall, gardening, cooking, or even going out to eat may be painful. This same population is prone to a higher incidence of anxiety, depression, cognitive challenges, and fatigue.

Who wants to go shopping when you’re depressed, foggy-headed, tired, and hurting?

Treatment Options for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can be related to an injury, a health condition, or an unknown source. Treatment may include any combination of the following.

  1. Taking pressure off damaged joints, including those of the spine, can help reduce pain in some situations. Pressure reduction can include weight loss and/or lightened activity.
  2. Exercise can strengthen muscles and release positive hormones that help us feel better. Regular exercise for at least 30 minutes, 3-7 times per week is the best practice. For low impact, try water aerobics, yoga, or Tai Chi.
  3. A doctor may suggest over-the-counter analgesics like aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like naproxen, acetaminophen, ibuprofen. Using NSAIDs long-term can create complications in the digestive system, as well as kidney and heart problems.
  4. Heat and cold therapy are effective for some patients.
  5. Medications known as topical analgesics, including brands such as Aspercreme, Tiger Balm, and Icy Hot, can provide temporary relief in the area of pain, for some patients.
  6. A personal TENS unit, properly used, may temporarily reduce or alleviate pain.
  7. For the spine, traction may help reduce pain. Some chiropractors and physicians offer this treatment in- office.
  8. Physical therapy remains an extremely common recommendation by doctors for patients with chronic pain. Improving range of motion and strengthening the core will redistribute some of the weight put on the spine. A PT may also recommend stretching exercises to practice at home, ice and heat therapy, or massage.
  9. If these treatments are not effective, a pain management doctor may prescribe a narcotic, such an opioid, for short-term use. These include hydrocodone, codeine, oxycodone, and morphine. They are highly addictive and tolerance can build up, making the patient require a higher dosage to maintain similar results. Opioid addiction is a serious problem in the United States, so consider alternatives if possible.
  10. The doctor may add an anticonvulsant, like gabapentin, to your medications to treat radicular pain.
  11. Antidepressants like serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors can help relieve some cases of chronic pain in the back.
  12. A muscle relaxant can resolve muscle spasms related to an area of pain, such as muscles that surround a degenerative disc.
  13. Steroid injections are often suggested, orally for 7-10 days or by injection at the site of the pain source. These offer temporary relief, ranging from weeks to months, depending upon the patient.
  14. Acupuncture targets meridians in the body, found along the nerve pathways. The practice is usually comfortable, and it stimulates blood flow while also signaling the release of endorphins.
  15. Chiropractic therapy involves skeletal manipulation to bring balance back to the underlying support of the body. Oftentimes, a chiropractor can effectively relieve a patient’s pain, without using narcotics.

Non-Invasive, Effective HICP Treatment with Chiropractic Acupuncture

At Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture in Roanoke, near Trophy Club and Justin, Dr. Cody Doyle is a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine. He’s also a certified acupuncturist. Throughout his career, Dr. Doyle has researched treatments for chronic pain. He offers treatment in the evolving field of chiropractic acupuncture. In some cases, acupuncture with chiropractic and herbal medicine yield outstanding results for chronic pain. Other patients respond best to chiropractic spinal manipulation and a regimen of home exercises.

Some patients use traditional medicine while undergoing treatment with Dr. Doyle, in an effort to find an alternative treatment that will not involve medications. Because all medications have side effects, and some build up in the body to cause issues over time, seeking alternative treatment for chronic pain is wise and practical.

TESTIMONIAL

“My pain management doctor recommended spinal and AI joint injections for my leg pain. Before undergoing the procedure, and because I knew that any relief the cortisone provided would be short-lived, I opted to visit Dr. Doyle. He has  my chiropractor and acupuncturist for a few years, for other issues. This is hard to believe, but In one visit – just one visit! – my leg pain was relieved. Praise God and thanks to Dr. Doyle. I literally hobbled into the office in pain and walked out, after chiropractic and acupuncture appointment.”

Protect Your Back While Spring Cleaning

Posted on 02.22.19 |

Protecting Your Back During Spring Cleaning in Roanoke, TXDid you know the spring season will officially begin on March 20th? After the cold winter months, warmer temperatures and a little sunshine can leave us itching to clean out dusty garages or organize an overcrowded coat closet. However, if you suffer from chronic lower back pain, or have injured your back recently, protecting your spine while spring cleaning could prevent muscle pain, stiffness, and fatigue. A visit to Roanoke, TX local chiro, Dr. Cody Doyle, can help you experience improved alignment and better circulation to reduce painful or debilitating symptoms. This spring, take care of yourself — and your spine —by keeping in mind these tips as you prepare your home for warmer months.

Does your back feel stiff, sore, or painful? Do you regularly apply heating pads and muscle ointment to help find relief? If you are experiencing uncomfortable symptoms in the back or shoulders, visit Dr. Cody Doyle. As a Roanoke, TX, local chiro, Dr. Doyle can help promote healing through alternative therapies such as chiropractic adjustments or myofascial release therapy. Don’t let back problems keep you immobile this spring. Contact our office now to schedule your appointment with Dr. Doyle.

Prepare with a quick warm-up.

It may seem silly to “warm-up” for household chores, but some cleaning and organizing tasks end up being rather strenuous. It’s always a good idea to prepare your muscles for activity by gently warming them up and opening up their range of motion. A few quick dynamic stretches can get your blood flowing and help prevent sore muscles the next day. Here are a few examples to get you started.

Always lift with the legs.

If you are carrying heavy boxes or loads of laundry, don’t bend at the waist to lift them off the ground. Always bend down at the knees into a squatting position when lifting. If it’s too heavy to comfortably carry, have your spouse or neighbor help out; carrying more than you can handle elevates your risk of injuring your back.

Don’t twist and turn.

For some home projects, such as replacing a hard-to-reach lightbulb, you may find yourself twisting or contorting to try and complete the task. However, whenever possible, avoid over-twisting or turning to the point that your spine is out of natural alignment. Overstretching the spine could result in a slipped disc which can lead to painful pinched nerves. Also, when your body isn’t able to balance, the chance for a fall or other injury increases. And home injuries are no joke; about 21 million Americans last year ended up at the hospital due to at-home injuries.

Consider a back brace.

At your next appointment with Dr. Doyle, ask about whether a supportive back brace is right for you. Different types of braces can help support different areas of the back, or help patients with certain chronic pain issues. Wearing a back brace while working around the home may offer the extra support you need to prevent spinal misalignment or inflammation.

See your Roanoke, TX local chiro.

If you have chronic or new back pain, it’s important to treat the underlying complications which could be contributing to your symptoms. Dr. Doyle offers a range of holistic treatments that work with your body’s natural ability to heal. He can help increase circulation and reduce areas of tension or inflammation. Regular appointments with Dr. Doyle can proactively help reduce back pain.

Degenerative Disk Disease–Can a Chiropractor Help?

Posted on 02.11.19 |

Degenerated disc in x-ray viewYou awaken with a slight backache that is unresponsive to medications, heating pads, Epsom salt baths, or other remedies. You have run out of options and have decided that the problem may be bigger than you thought.

Knowing you have degenerative disc disease, you scour the internet for help. Surprisingly, you find out many people with your symptoms get help from a chiropractor.

Today, Dr. Cody Doyle explores several aspects of this painful condition. We will also discuss how we can help reduce or eliminate your symptoms at our Roanoke, TX practice.

What is Degenerative Disk Disease?

Degenerative disk disease (DDD) involves damage to the spinal discs between the vertebrae, which results in pain. The pain usually occurs in the cervical spine, lumbar spine, or mid-back, and may radiate down the arms or legs.

Consider thinking of your spinal disks like the shock absorbers on a car. Your spinal disks have the job of buffering any impact your body may encounter. With repeated impacts, the disks get less effective at absorbing the shocks.

Eventually, those disks may not work well in absorbing the impacts your body encounters. Over time, this wear and tear causes more damage, leading to DDD.

What Are the Causes and Effects of Disk Disease?

The causes and effects of disc degeneration are intertwined into the aging process and can become a long term issue.

As your body matures, your structure changes, including bones, joints, and disks. You may begin to develop pain in areas that were once pain-free.

DDD begins with your intervertebral discs changing, which also affects your mobility. You may also notice differences in your spine and joints.

Things you used to do easily now leave you with pain because of your damaged discs. Sometimes, it can progress to a herniated disc.

Several factors can cause your disks to deteriorate. Some of the most common include:

  • Condition of the disc: As we age, our disks lose water, causing them to dry out and shrink. Therefore, they cannot absorb the shocks that occur with impacts on our bodies as well as they used to.
  • Your daily activity level: Exercise, sports, and other physical activities may exacerbate any symptoms.
  • Accidents and injuries: Trauma can cause pain, weakness, and swelling. You may even notice “pops and cracks” down your spine when you get out of bed and as you attempt to walk or bend over.

What are the Symptoms?

DDD has an array of symptoms with some of the most common being:

  • Numbness and “tingling” sensations in your limbs
  • Tolerable pain that escalates into unbearable agony
  • Pain that worsens when you bend over, walk, sit, or even standstill
  • Pain that reaches down to your lumbar spine, buttocks, and thighs
  • “Shooting” pain or pain that spikes without warning

What Does A Diagnosis of Disk Disease Include?

A diagnosis of DDD may include:

  • A thorough examination of your back and body, including X-rays and other digital imaging
  • A review of your medical history
  • Description of the symptoms you are having

4 Common Causes of Arm Pain

Posted on 01.16.19 |

man experiencing arm pain

Achy elbows, tight wrists, and skin irritations are just a few of a maladies that can get in the way of your tennis swing and day-to-day activities. Many of the causes of arm pain have treatment options available at Dr. Cody Doyle’s chiropractic care office in Roanoke, TX. To schedule an exploratory exam, contact Dr. Doyle at (817) 767-5430.

Common Causes of Arm Pain and Recommended Treatments

Arthritis

Arthritis, characterized by inflammation of the joints, afflicts tens of millions of Americans. The autoimmune disease commonly falls into two categories: degenerative and inflammatory. Degenerative arthritis, sometimes referred to as osteoarthritis, affects over 25 million Americans. The chronic joint condition is often associated with aging and can lead to pain, swelling, and stiffness in shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingers. Inflammatory arthritis, also known as rheumatoid arthritis, is commonly associated with other forms of diseases, such as lupus and psoriatic arthritis, and can be debilitating in its advanced states.

Both forms of arthritis, while not curable, can be managed with medication and holistic methods like chiropractic care and acupuncture.

An article published by the Arthritis Foundation described the potential benefits of acupuncture for treating arthritis. In fact, over 50 percent of patients with osteoarthritis enjoy some benefit from acupuncture treatments. Best of all, there are no harmful side effects to acupuncture, unlike prescription pain medication.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Are you experiencing throbbing pain, tingling sensations, skin sensitivity, or other forms of pain?

The discomfort may be the result of peripheral neuropathy, a condition that affects the nervous systems of over 20 million people in the United States. The condition disrupts communication from the peripheral nerves to the central nervous system and to the rest of the body.

Dr. Doyle has over 20 years of experience reducing the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. The pain may be the result of nutrient deficiencies or toxins. Detoxification may be one treatment option. Other remedies, depending on your diagnosis, may include premodulated muscle stimulation (strategic electrical stimulation), chiropractic care, ultrasound, or acupuncture. The staff at Doyle Chiropractic & Acupuncture will monitor your progress and recommend follow-up procedures as needed.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis, or the inflammation of a tendon, can cause severe discomfort and pain as well as limiting arm movement. Tendinitis may be the result of an injury or repetition of a specific movement. Hence, many forms of tendinitis are euphemistically called “tennis elbow” or “pitcher’s shoulder.” The ailment can often be cured with physical therapy, pain treatments, and avoidance of repetitive movements. Dr. Doyle will be glad to diagnose and offer treatment options for this form of injury.

Misaligned Vertebrae

Bulging disks, misaligned vertebrae, and other causes of disk-related pain can cause a wide range of symptoms, including pain in the outer extremities. Fortunately, there are several treatment options for people suffering from spinal injuries.

The common spinal manipulation methods performed at Doyle Chiropractic & Acupuncture include: diversified method (hand-applied pressure), activator method (mechanical manipulation using handheld device), Thompson method (manual thrusts with drop table technique), and Gonstead Method (similar to diversified but using a variety of tables, positions, and manual thrusts).

Top Reasons to Visit a Local Chiropractor in Roanoke, TX

Posted on 01.4.19 |

Have you often wondered if you should add a local chiropractor in Roanoke, TX to your list of healthcare partners? Many individuals contact Dr. Cody Doyle at (817) 767-5430 to schedule exploratory exams to determine if chiropractic care is the right choice for them. Want to know some of the more common reasons patients prefer having a local chiro on their side? Read on for insights.

1. You were in a car accident.

Car crashes often result in some kind of trauma to the body. Even if you walked away from your accident only a little bruised, you may have suffered health problems that could arise later. For instance, many crash survivors report lingering back and neck pain long after the incident.

A local chiro can help bring your body back to a state of proper balance through spinal manipulation and related treatments. Each visit is an opportunity for you to experience enhanced healing through a safe, nonsurgical approach.

2. You have chronic pain.

Maybe your pain ranges from your lower to middle back. Perhaps you have discomfort in your hips or knees. Regardless, you deserve relief from pain that does not include increasingly high doses of prescription medications or over-the-counter pills.

A chiropractor will discuss your unique pain and then use manipulations to address the underlying problem. Dr. Doyle may also suggest other alternative medicine approaches such as acupuncture to complement your treatment plan.

3. You were diagnosed with allergies.

Does it seem like your world turns into a fog every spring or fall? If allergies leave you groggy and uncomfortable for weeks or months out of the year, talk to your chiropractor. Chiropractic medicine has proven helpful for allergy sufferers of all ages. Even young children with the first signs of allergies can explore chiropractic treatment to lessen the effects of their allergies to pollen, dander, dust, etc.

4. Your job requires repetitive motions.

Do you find yourself repeating the same motion again and again while at work? Repetitive actions can quickly lead to body issues. Even sitting all day and working at the computer can become a source of hip problems, back problems, shoulder issues, and chronically tight muscles.

To help restore your body to a more natural state, Dr. Doyle will perform the appropriate type of adjustment treatment on you at each visit. That way, you can return to your work feeling less fatigued. You may even discover that you start to enjoy work more because it does not leave you as exhausted or worn out at the end of a day.

5. You are trying to lose weight.

The weight loss journey often includes a trip to a local chiro for individuals in Roanoke, TX who are trying to jumpstart a healthier way of life. Poor nutrition can have an effect on the way you carry yourself over time. A chiropractor can activate your body and awaken its natural abilities to heal. This, in turn, can help you shed unwanted pounds because exercise will become easier. When applied in tandem with improved nutrition, chiropractic medicine can be an excellent weight loss treatment tool.

6. You experience migraines.

Do you experience migraines once a month, like clockwork? Do they come out of the blue? Either way, you should consider making a phone call to a chiropractor. Left untreated, migraines can reduce your quality of life. Why let pain steal your days or nights when chiropractic care can provide relief?

Is Pain Management Possible Without More Pills?

Posted on 01.3.19 |

Do you have chronic pain but dislike the idea of getting yet another monthly prescription? If you want to avoid adding more pills to your daily regimen of medications, why not consider the value of chiropractic for pain management? Many individuals have found that regular visits to a chiropractor help manage their pain without the need for more medications. Contact Dr. Cody Doyle in Roanoke, TX by calling (817) 767-5430 to schedule a visit and discuss pill-free pain management treatment options including chiropractic care and acupuncture treatments.

Why Choose Holistic Pain Management?

Patients who have recurring bouts of pain often seek alternative pain management options to increasing their reliance on medicines. There are many reasons for not wanting to add more medications to someone’s daily dosage of pills, including:

  • Worries about tolerance: Certain pain medications lose their effectiveness over time. To combat this fact, patients need to increase their dosages, which can lead to other issues. In some cases, prescriptions may completely lose their effectiveness, meaning a patient has to switch to another pharmaceutical.
  • Worries about dependence: Many individuals are very concerned about the possibility of becoming dependent on painkillers. This is especially true for those who have already shown signs of addictive tendencies, or who have overcome a substance addiction.
  • Worries about cost: Medications can be costly, especially for individuals on a fixed income or whose healthcare plans prefer to pay for other types of treatments, such as chiropractic care.
  • Worries about contraindications: Every time a new medicine is added to an individual’s daily intake, it may lead to sometimes unpleasant or even potentially fatal contraindications with other medications.
  • Worries about mobility and independence: Certain painkillers make it difficult for patients to safely operate machinery or even drive a vehicle. Patients may be concerned about losing their freedom or ability to keep jobs they love.
  • Worries about general health: Our society has moved toward more holistic approaches to medicine. Taking more pills may be counterintuitive to the holistic healthcare preferred by some patients.
  • Worries about unwanted side effects: Some painkillers have unpleasant side effects, such as increasing the risk of depression, changes in appetite, difficulty sleeping, or lowered libido. Patients may want to consider non-medication forms of pain management to avoid these side effects.

These are all strong reasons for patients to talk with a chiropractor about natural pain management.

How Chiropractic Pain Management Works

Pain management through specifically designed chiropractic and acupuncture treatments involves using diagnostic tools and evaluations to understand the root source of the pain. Dr. Doyle will complete a comprehensive patient examination and then present a pain management treatment plan. The treatment plan will be customized to help the body heal itself and promote lowered pain.

In addition to in-office treatments, Dr. Doyle may also recommend that a patient with chronic pain make behavioral changes such as losing weight, eating anti-inflammatory foods, and performing certain exercises at home. Regardless if the pain stems from an injury, arthritis, or another cause, Dr. Doyle will help minimize discomfort using his 20 years of knowledge and experience. The goal for all patients is a reduction in their daily pain, and an improvement in their peace of mind and quality of life.

Top 5 Questions About Chiropractic Care

Posted on 12.13.18 |

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistic, an estimated 47,400 chiropractors (chiros) were actively practicing in the U.S. in 2016. And despite nearly 40 million Americans visiting a chiro each year, misconceptions about their legitimacy still persist. Today, we here at Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture in Roanoke, TX are setting the record straight.

Question #1: Are chiropractors considered doctors?

Chiros have to undergo extensive training before they are licensed, as well as continually refine their skills and stay current with the latest adjustment techniques. Typically, they graduate with a pre-med major after taking biology, physics, chemistry and/or psychology courses. Then, they attend a chiropractic graduate program, which usually involves four years of education, passing the arduous four-part National Board Examinations, and finally, completing a whopping 4,200 instructional hours in course credits. While they are considered Doctors of Chiropractic, chiros are not medical doctors. There is some crossover with the education they receive, but the differences are significant. Chiros do not perform surgeries or prescribe medications and medical doctors do not adjust vertebral subluxations.

Question #2: What do chiropractors treat?

Chiros are health care professionals, first and foremost. They focus primarily on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders that cause musculoskeletal or nerve pain, with an emphasis on treatment via manipulation and/or adjustment of the spine. Some of the main spine-related conditions that may be treated by a chiro include:

  • Chronic pain
  • Subluxation
  • Back sprains and strains
  • Neck sprains and strains
  • Cervicogenic headaches
  • Herniated disc
  • Sciatica
  • Whiplash
  • Myofascial pain
  • Degenerative disc disease (DDD)

Question #3: Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

In short—yes. However, like most things, there is some risk. But, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), that risk is only about 1 in more than 5 million. Chiropractic has a solid safety record and is widely recognized as one of the less harmful therapies available for treating musculoskeletal pain. It’s also held in high regard because it emphasizes a more natural approach to healthcare that steers clear of invasive procedures or prescription drugs.

Question #4:  Do chiropractors only treat adults?

When we think of reasons to seek chiro care, we tend to only picture adults who have severe back pain or general posture problems. While it is true that adults seek chiro care more than other age groups, chiros treat patients of all ages and ethnicities, across all economic and social spectrums. In fact, in January of 2009, the ACA reported that the number of chiro patients who were 16 years old or younger had spiked by more than eight percent since 1991.

Question #5:  Is visiting a chiropractor expensive?

In terms of cost-effectiveness, chiro care costs about 40 percent less than visiting a medical doctor, on average. However, since chiro care often requires ongoing treatment, we offer our patients various payment options and provide a comprehensive treatment plan to ensure your health needs are met.
