How Chiropractic Care Can Help with Roanoke Fibromyalgia Pain Relief

Posted on 09.29.17 |

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that affects the musculoskeletal system and causes extensive pain throughout the body. Fibromyalgia symptoms can include migraines, chronic fatigue, joint stiffness, and a host of other issues. Because symptoms are widespread and can affect multiple areas of the body, it can be difficult to diagnose and treat. In fact, medical science has been unable to determine the exact cause of fibromyalgia. People with this condition often suffer with ongoing pain and have difficulty performing routine daily tasks. Dr. Cody Doyle at Doyle Chiropractic offers Roanoke fibromyalgia pain relief so patients can enjoy a better quality of life.

To schedule your consultation at our Roanoke, TX office, contact us online or give us a call at (817) 767-5430.

What Are the Symptoms of Fibromyalgia?

The symptoms of fibromyalgia affect a variety of organs, muscles, bones, and joints in the body and can include:

  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Sleep disorders
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Nausea
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Myofascial pain or fatigue
  • Joint stiffness
  • TMJ disorder
  • Weight gain
  • Neck and back pain

Why Chiropractic Care Can Help

As a holistic treatment, chiropractic care focuses on correcting vertebral subluxations in your spine. When your spine is properly aligned through gentle, manual and mechanical adjustments, it can reverse both musculoskeletal and central nervous system conditions. Your spine is designed to protect your spinal cord. This nervous tissue runs the length of your back and connects directly to your brain. It is responsible for operating your body’s entire central nervous system, continually sending messages from your brain to other organs in your body on how to function.

If your spine is even slightly misaligned, it may result in neck and back pain, but it can also negatively impact other organs in your body causing the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. Dr. Doyle is a big proponent of a healthy spine means a healthy body. He offers a variety of chiropractic treatment methods in order to customize treatment to meet patients’ individualized needs.

Other Common Treatment Methods

In addition to chiropractic care, Dr. Doyle also offers:

  • Myofascial Release Therapy: During this treatment, gentle, sustained hands-on pressure is applied to the skin to address specific connective tissues and muscles within the body. Because muscle pain and joint stiffness are often common symptoms associated with fibromyalgia, myofascial release therapy can help improve flexibility and mobility, as well as promote healthy blood and lymphatic circulation.
  • Acupuncture: Based on ancient Chinese medicine, acupuncture involves placing tiny, sterilized needles directly into the skin to stimulate underlying muscles and tissues to improve musculoskeletal issues. This treatment is based on a theory that your physical health is dependent on healthy energy flow. When energy flow is interrupted, it can lead to pain and inflammation – two of the most common symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. By correcting your energy flow, you can promote healthy musculoskeletal function and reduce pain.
  • Herbal and Nutritional Therapies: Doyle may also recommend vitamins and natural supplements that can be taken to reduce fibromyalgia pain and inflammation in your body. He can also fabricate a nutritional plan to improve your digestion and help promote healthy weight loss.

4 Ways to Improve Degenerative Disc Disease

Posted on 09.12.17 |

X-ray highlighting Roanoke degenerative disc diseaseThe term degenerative disc disease is somewhat misleading, as it is not technically a disease, nor is it strictly degenerative. However, it can be corrected with holistic treatment and lifestyle changes.

The bones of the spine are called vertebrae. The discs between those bones act as shock absorbers. As we age, the discs between the vertebrae lose fluid, drying them out and making them shrink. Also, wear and tear accumulates over the years and adds to the problem.

However, other things can cause damage as well. For instance, lack of exercise, smoking, hormone imbalances, and high impact physical activity can cause disc degeneration.

As fluid decreases within the spinal discs, the outer shells deteriorate. This prevents it from absorbing shock and places pressure on the lumbar spine, cervical spine, or thoracic spine.

The additional pressure and lack of shock absorption can lead to chronic neck and back pain. It can also lead to limited mobility and tingling in the extremities. Pain may worsen during certain activities, making sitting, bending, or twisting difficult.

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is one of the most common causes of back and neck pain. In fact, it affects nearly 30 million Americans each year. Further damage to a patient with DDD can lead to a herniated disc.

Here, Dr. Cody Doyle discusses treatment options that can reduce your pain and improve your quality of life.

Chiropractic Care for Degenerative Disc Disease

The spine protects your entire central nervous system, which is responsible for all the muscle and organ functions within your body.

  • As the intervertebral discs shrink, the bones in your spine become misaligned. This triggers the nerves in your spine to misfire, resulting in pain, fatigue, and a host of other symptoms.

Through chiropractic care, Dr. Doyle performs spinal adjustments to promote healing. During these adjustments, he uses a variety of manual and mechanical techniques to gently correct misalignments.

Acupuncture to Improve Back Pain

Proper energy flow in the body affects your performance. Disruption of your energy flow increases pain and inflammation.

Acupuncture is a holistic treatment that involves inserting thin, sterilized needles into certain acupoints on the skin. When properly placed, these hair-thin needles stimulate and encourage proper energy flow.

Based on traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is a proven, effective tool to reduce neck and back pain.

Physical Therapy for Degenerative Disc Disease

Building up the muscles in your back can help your spine stay properly aligned and increases your mobility and flexibility.

Back and neck injuries frequently require the avoidance of strenuous exercise for a period of time. However, some exercises and stretching can be tremendously helpful.

Dr. Doyle can prescribe physical therapy exercises that you can perform at home or at the gym to strengthen your muscles. He can also provide myofascial release therapy. This treatment is a deep muscle massage technique that releases tension and improves your flexibility and function.

Lifestyle Improvements

Smoking and obesity can worsen degenerative disc disease. Dr. Doyle encourages the avoidance of smoking and tobacco products.

Dr. Doyle can prescribe a weight loss treatment plan designed specifically for your body that helps alleviate pressure on your spine. He also offers ear acupuncture, which speeds up your metabolism and promotes effective weight loss. In addition, he offers recommendations regarding vitamins and herbal supplements. Moreover, he can let you know about foods you should incorporate in your diet or avoid.

How to Have a Better Quality of Life with Degenerative Arthritis

Posted on 08.10.17 |

hands with degenerative arthritisDegenerative arthritis, better known as osteoarthritis, affects approximately 27 million American adults who are over the age of 25 years old. It is also the leading form of arthritis in the United States. As you age, your chances for developing arthritis increase dramatically. If you suffer from this joint condition, then you’re familiar with the symptoms: stiffness, mild swelling, pain when moving, and limited range of motion.

Arthritic patients often experience a decrease in quality of life due to the limitations placed on them. For most patients, arthritis pain increases throughout the day, which makes evening outings uncomfortable and sometimes impossible. Dr. Cody Doyle in Roanoke, TX uses a holistic approach to managing arthritis pain. He restores your quality of life by manipulating the musculoskeletal system in the body through acupuncture.

To learn more about how Dr. Doyle uses acupuncture to manage arthritis pain, call 817-767-5430 to schedule your appointment in Roanoke, TX today.

Degenerative Arthritis and Acupuncture

Acupuncture is derived from Chinese culture and designed to open blocked meridian channels. According to the Chinese, the body has roughly 20 invisible channels (meridian channels). There are approximately 2,000 acupuncture points that are connected to various sections of these channels. Qi, the body’s natural energy flow, moves throughout the meridian channels. When the channels become blocked, energy builds up at that blocked spot and results in pain and/or illness.

Dr. Doyle inserts specialized acupuncture needles into various points in the body to open the blocked channels. Endorphins are released when the needles make contact with the blocked channels and naturally fight painful sensations in the body. Quality of life improves when pain is properly managed.

By holistically manipulating the musculoskeletal system, Dr. Doyle stimulates neurotransmitters, such as cortisol and endorphins, which reduces inflammation and aids arthritic pain felt in stiff joints. Unlike NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), there are no side effects with acupuncture treatment. Some patients feel that this nonsurgical treatment is ineffective, however there is limited, yet promising, research about the significant effects of acupuncture and degenerative arthritis.

At-Home Pain Management

Along with acupuncture care with Dr. Doyle, there are changes that can be made at home to manage degenerative arthritis pain. After receiving treatment with Dr. Doyle, you can begin to make small changes to improve your quality of life.

Get Moving

Although arthritic patients experience stiffness and pain, it’s important to stay active. Degenerative arthritis causes pain when you attempt to move, however once you make the movement, the pain stops. Dr. Doyle encourages his arthritis patients to participate in physical activities, such as taking a short walk in the morning when pain is less severe. If you’re a fan of the water, you could do a few laps in the local pool to get your joints moving. Regular exercise has also been shown to reduce stress, a key contributor to inflammation in the body. Exercising not only reduces the side effects of arthritis, but can promote healthy bones, strong muscles, and mental clarity.

You Are What You Eat

A great way to promote a healthy body and happy joints is to eat anti-inflammatory foods, such as:

  • Yogurt
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Fresh fruits
  • Green tea
  • Cook with oregano, basil, or ginger

Looking for Drug-Free Neuropathy Treatments Near Me?

Posted on 07.14.17 |

treat neuropathy with acupuncture

Neuropathy is the medical term for peripheral nerve damage — and it’s painful. The peripheral nervous system consists of all nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system (CNS).

Neuropathy most commonly affects arms, legs, fingers, and toes. The good news is, the condition may be reversed! Nerves have the capability to heal themselves.

Certain holistic treatments may reduce or relieve your pain so that you can return to enjoying life.

Dr. Cody Doyle treats neuropathy symptoms to accelerate the healing process. If you need “neuropathy treatments near me”, call us to learn how we can help you get out of pain.

How does neuropathy occur?

Diabetes is the most common cause of chronic peripheral neuropathy.

High blood sugar levels damage nerves, as well as blood vessel walls. This damage leads to less oxygen and nutrients being delivered to nerves. Furthermore, poor circulation impedes the healing process. As with many diabetes side effects, there’s a downward spiral of problems with neuropathy caused by diabetes.

Nerve pain can also be caused by:

  • Injury (like a ruptured disk)
  • Infections
  • Drugs (including chemotherapy)
  • Constant pressure on a nerve (like carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Genetics

Older adults are at the highest risk of developing neuropathy. If there the cause isn’t pinpointed, the condition is called idiopathic neuropathy.

Drug-Free Treatment for Neuropathy and Related Pain

Dr. Doyle uses a combination of personalized treatments to address pain and reverse neuropathy. Joint mobilization and acupuncture are safe and the pain relief is immediate.

Pain management is only one of the benefits Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture can offer you. Increased circulation, increased mobility, and better overall health are important treatment goals.

Call us today to book your appointment at our acupuncture and chiropractic office in Roanoke.

Effects of Neuropathy

Nerves that control function, motion, and feeling are susceptible to developing neuropathy. Mononeuropathy is the term that refers to a single nerve being damaged. Polyneuropathy means several nerves are affected.

Neuropathy pain is experienced differently in patients, but some symptoms are common.

Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Burning, tingling, or cold sensations
  • Cramps
  • Weakness
  • Balance problems and dizziness
  • Sensitivity on skin
  • Quickened heartbeat
  • Night sweats
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Numbness
  • Bladder irritation
  • General pain

Long-term neuropathy leads to a lack of pain sensation. While this may sound good, pain is the body’s way of communicating when something is wrong. Without pain sensations, a person is at risk of repeatedly causing injury, having an infection, or bleeding without knowing about it.

As you can imagine, this stage of neuropathy is extremely dangerous. Other long-term symptoms are loss of balance or coordination and difficulty walking.

The Difference at Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture

Traditional medicine treats the CNS with prescription drugs which can take weeks to even begin to work. Many medications also come with unpleasant side effects.

In addition to chiropractic care and acupuncture, treatments include many holistic solutions. Dr. Doyle consults on nutrition, herbal or vitamin supplements, and detox programs.

Dr. Doyle also prescribes treatments involving therapeutic home exercise programs, myofascial release, deep stretching, and modalities like electrical stimulation and ultrasound. Our goal is to provide you with the best care possible for your neuropathy and to eliminate or reduce pain.

If you need “neuropathy care near me” in Roanoke or Trophy Club call 817-767-5430 today. Our office is located across from Hawaiian Falls at 295 W. Byron Nelson Blvd. #212 in the retail center with Benjamin’s Pizza.

Chiropractic Care for Inflammatory Arthritis

Posted on 07.10.17 |

Simply put, inflammatory arthritis is inflammation in your joints. Synovial fluid acts as lubrication in the joint. When synovial fluid becomes inflamed, it thickens. The thickening of synovial fluid is what causes the signs and symptoms associated with arthritis. The reason synovial fluid becomes inflamed isn’t clear. Evidence suggests that genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors all play a role. Non inflammatory arthritis (a misnomer) is also inflammation in the joint. The difference is this inflammation is caused by cartilage breaking down from general wear and tear. Non inflammatory arthritis is usually found in a single joint. The signs and symptoms of inflammatory arthritis can be localized or widespread affecting multiple areas of your body.

acupuncture for arthritis of the knee

Traditional medicines are good, but a holistic approach is often preferable. If you feel your condition requires more than over-the-counter or prescription medication, or you want alternative options for treating arthritis, call 817-767-5430 for a consultation Dr. Doyle today. Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture is located in Roanoke across from Hawaiian Falls.

Types of Arthritis

Inflammatory arthritis encompasses any type of arthritis involving the immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most prevalent form. RA affects more than 2 million people, most of whom are women. RA most often affects the hands, wrist, and feet. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (also known as juvenile RA) occurs in children and adolescents age 16 and under. People who suffer from psoriasis of the skin can develop psoriatic arthritis. Ankylosis Spondylitis results from inflammation in the spine. Other autoimmune diseases such as gout and lupus erythematosus can also lead to inflammatory arthritis.

Symptoms of Arthritis

Symptoms include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness (especially in the mornings), and swelling. As arthritis worsens, limited or total loss of mobility, deformity, and muscle weakness occur. If you suffer from inflammatory arthritis, systematic inflammation can also cause: skin rashes, dry mouth, hair loss, eye inflammation, and fever.

How Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture Can Help You

A Holistic Approach to Managing Your Wrist Pain

Posted on 05.5.17 |

Roanoke wrist painAre you searching for a holistic approach to manage your irritating wrist pain? Overuse of non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can lead to serious medical issues, like stomach bleeding and increased risk of heart and/or renal failure. These drugs, such as Motrin, Advil, and Aleve, can temporarily alleviate our wrist pain, but long-term use has been linked to causing more harm than good. Managing your pain holistically with acupuncture and chiropractic treatments is a great alternative and is better for your body in the long run.

Call Cody Doyle in Roanoke, TX at 817-767-5430 to discuss your holistic treatment options today.

What causes wrist pain?

Wrist pain can arise because of an old or a new injury—maybe it’s that old baseball injury that you never really got over? We can also cause ourselves to experience pain when we overuse our wrists, such as when we spend all day at a desk job. In a technology-focused world, more of us are spending our days typing away on the computer, forgetting the effects it may have on our bodies.

Rheumatoid arthritis, or inflammatory arthritis, is another reason we might experience wrist pain. Arthritis is an autoimmune disease that affects roughly 2 million Americans, and causes inflammation of joints and tissues. It can sometimes cause the joints in your wrists to feel warm to the touch. Arthritis can also restrict your normal range of motion, limiting your wrist mobility. We can develop this disease for many reasons, including genetic and environmental factors.

Tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome can also cause wrist pain. Carpal tunnel syndrome results from excessive pressure being exerted on your wrist and median nerve. The median nerve runs from the shoulder all the way down to the wrist. When this nerve has too much pressure applied to it, it can be painful.

How to Manage Wrist Pain

There are ways to reduce your risk of experiencing wrist pain. You can take breaks throughout your workday, if you spend your day typing. Make an effort to relax your wrists and use a different range of motions during these breaks. You can also increase your water intake, which will keep your arm’s moving parts well hydrated. Another method for reducing your risk of wrist pain is to apply ice to your wrists whenever you experience any pain. However, if these recommendations don’t cut it for you and your wrist pain, maybe it’s time to give acupuncture and chiropractic treatments a try. Acupuncture and chiropractic techniques are two great resources for holistically reducing your wrist pain. Rather than managing your pain with medication, these non-surgical, drug free techniques focus on fixing what’s wrong in the mechanics of your body.

What is acupuncture?

Most Americans have probably never considered seeking out acupuncture care. However, this traditional Chinese practice is becoming increasingly popular to manage a wide variety of medical conditions, including wrist pain. Acupuncture is a great way to increase energy levels, while simultaneously increasing nourishing blood flow to overtaxed nerves, tissues and joints.. Dr. Doyle will strategically insert stainless-steel needles into your body, to stimulate the inflamed tissues and nerves causing your wrist pain.

 What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic care realigns the vertebrae in your spine that can lead to arthritis and other disorders like anxiety or inflammation, when they are misaligned. Dr. Doyle will create a personalized pain management plan that releases tension and will help to ease your wrist pain. Along with spinal realignment, Dr. Doyle can teach you some exercises to do at home to help manage your wrist pain, as well as recommend dietary changes that may lead to less inflammation.

Top 5 Questions About Acupuncture

Posted on 04.6.17 |

acupuncture needlesDid you know that acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to relieve symptoms of painful medical conditions–and even as a form of surgical anesthesia? The practice began in Asia, but has spread to the rest of the world as more patients find value in its use. The western world has only been studying acupuncture for approximately 45 years, however, so don’t be surprised if all doctors aren’t quick to tout its value.

Dr. Cody Doyle has spent the past 20 years studying acupuncture, as one of many alternative therapies. In many cases, it is an effective treatment that helps patients deal with problems that conventional western medicine has failed to cure. Here are five of the top questions Dr. Doyle is often asked about acupuncture.

Are you exhausted with doctors’ failure to relieve your symptoms? Contact Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture online today to learn what we can do for your symptoms. To reach our Roanoke, TX office, call (817) 767-5430. Patients in La Grange, TX may call (979) 968-6400. Roanoke acupuncture and alternative therapies may help you find relief!

What does it treat?

Acupuncture is an excellent complement to western medicine and other alternative therapies. When you meet Dr. Doyle, he will assess your symptoms and determine the best combination of drug-free nonsurgical treatments. These may include chiropractic treatments, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and/or others. In addition to chronic pain, Dr. Doyle’s treatments can also address tingling, numbness, nerve pain, and other conditions.

With over twenty years of experience in the field, Dr. Doyle has helped scores of patients manage symptoms of:

  • disc problems
  • degenerative and inflammatory arthritis
  • lower back pain, neck pain, and middle back pain
  • peripheral neuropathy
  • plantar fasciitis
  • upper and lower extremity conditions (e.g., tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder problems; and hip, knee and ankle mobility issues)
  • seasonal allergies
  • obesity

When one aspect of your health is misaligned, it can affect many other parts of your body. Dr. Doyle is often able to help patients manage multiple conditions in single treatment plan of combined therapy. Read more about the conditions Dr. Doyle has treated here.

How does it work?

If you know nothing else, you probably know that acupuncture involves needles! These tiny, sterile needles bloodlessly pierce the uppermost layers of skin, at various parts of the body. After Dr. Doyle has inserted the needles at strategic points, you will rest comfortably for a short period of time to complete the session.

Western science doesn’t fully understand the functions by which acupuncture works, but the countless patients who’ve benefited from it will testify that it does work! Acupuncture tends to work best as a complement to other therapies, and its pain relieving qualities are maximized with long-term treatment. In fact, more medical insurers are covering acupuncture than in the past, especially when it is part of a combined approach to pain relief or anesthesia.

Does it hurt?

In the hands of an expert practitioner, acupuncture will never cause you any pain or discomfort. Many of our patients do not even notice when a needle is being placed.

Will my insurance cover it?

Unfortunately, most insurers do not cover acupuncture therapy. However, in the complex world of chronic pain relief, more and more insurers are becoming open to drug-free treatment options. If you have a condition that persists, despite a full regimen of standard medical interventions, call your insurer and ask if they have policies in place for patients like you.

If you are on a tight budget and will receive no assistance from your medical insurer, tell Dr. Doyle about your situation and he may be able to offer a payment plan. At Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture, we don’t want to see anyone suffer needlessly, when potential treatments may help your condition.

Alternative Treatment For Arthritis–A New Hope

Posted on 12.2.16 |

Many patients, after receiving a diagnosis of arthritis, believe that not much can really be done to help them.  The diagnosis usually comes abruptly, from a well intentioned physician, without much explanation or discussion regarding causation or treatment options. “It’s just arthritis” we are told, “Old Arthur comes to visit us all eventually.” It is as if the diagnosis is something of a normal consequence of aging. That annoying uncle that must be tolerated and accepted for the rest of your days.acupuncture for arthritic knees

Of course there are options like pills, steroid injections, pain management, nerve burning, and even surgical procedures that are used in a otiose attempt to mitigate the persistent symptoms of the bothersome “Uncle Arthur.” However, it is now clear that the use of medications, surgeries, and injections in the treatment of osteoarthritis can lead to unintended and occasionally devastating outcomes.

A New Perspective

After years of treating patients suffering from the painful effects of degenerative arthritis, I have come to learn that a new approach is required. No longer is it acceptable to simply throw pills at the problem. The research is clear. Without a comprehensive approach that addresses the fundamental causes of the degenerative process, no lasting recovery from the effects of arthritis can be expected.

We must look at the problem from a completely different point of view. We know that the fundamental cause of degenerative arthritis is loss of function within a motion segment. The loss of function leads to abnormal motion with causes inflammation of the joint. Chronic inflammation leads to degeneration which leads to more loss of function and more pain. It is a vicious cycle.

Any hope at improvement must be focused on dismantling the cycle. Once the cycle is dismantled (not just broken) improvement that leads to lasting recovery can begin.

To dismantle this chronic and degenerative cycle, we ask specific questions relative to your unique condition. We will commonly ask questions like….

  • What can be done improve the function in your area of complaint?
    • Example: Both traditional and low force chiropractic techniques can help improve joint function and biomechanics.
    • Example: Acupuncture is excellent for decreasing spasm, reducing inflammation, promoting healing, and restoring function.
    • Example: Massage, therapeutic exercise, ultrasound, and electric muscle stimulation can all be utilized to improve joint function and health
    • Other modalities and techniques will be addressed and discussed depending on your unique situation
  • What dietary changes need to be addressed to promote healing and decrease inflammation?
    • Do you consume artificial sweeteners? Sweeteners like aspartame are highly inflammatory.
    • What is you level of hydration? Inflammation thrives when we don’t get adequate water intake.
    • Are there any foods or habits that need to be addressed to give you the best chance at recovery?
    • We will make specific recommendations relating to your diet in order the promote healing and improvement
  • What stretches and/or exercise programs need to be implemented to promote healing and recovery?
    • A specific, custom tailored exercise program will be developed and updated throughout the course of your treatment plan.
  • Do you require nutritional and/or herbal supplementation?
    • When and if we believe that you would benefit from nutritional and/or herbal supplementation, we will custom tailor your person supplement schedule.
  • Do you have any medications that may be causing some of your symptoms?
    • We are happy to work with you and your prescribing doctor to suggest alternatives to any prescription medications that may be slowing or hampering your recovery.
  • And many more…

I believe the success we have had in our clinics in treating patients with degenerative arthritis over the last 20 years lies in the uniqueness of our approach to care. Our model has you, the individual patient, at it’s core. Since no two conditions are the same, it stands to reason that no two treatment plans should be the same either. We get to the core of the degenerative cycle specific to your individual condition and dismantle it so that treatment can begin and healing can occur.

This is certainly not an overnight process and it will take a considerable amount of effort of your part to meet your goals. However, we have accompanied thousands of patients on this journey and we will be with you to provide support, encouragement, and love throughout the process.

Call us today and let’s get started! I look forward to seeing you in or La Grange or Roanoke, TX chiropractic and acupuncture office.
