Chiropractic Care vs Prescription Medication

Posted on 10.10.19 |

free womanMigraines, lower back pain, neck pain, and spinal disc issues are common types of pain among American adults. According to the National Institutes of Health, 76 million adults in the United States live with chronic pain. To treat these issues, traditional medical doctors often prescribe NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and aspirin, or stronger drugs like narcotics and muscle relaxants. While these medications can relieve pain, they do not treat the physiological issues that cause pain. Without proper treatment through chiropractic care, the source of your pain could become worse over time.

At Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture, our highly skilled chiro, Dr. Cody Doyle, offers all-natural, holistic treatment options to reduce pain and restore your body’s function. Begin your journey toward total wellness today. Schedule an appointment at our Roanoke, TX office at 817-767-5430.

Scientific Evidence

In a 2012 scientific study, 272 people who suffered from neck pain were placed into three groups:

  1. SMT Group: These participants met with a chiropractor over the course of 12 weeks to receive spinal manipulation treatment.
  2. Medication Group: A licensed medical physician examined these participants and prescribed NSAIDs, acetaminophen, narcotics, or muscle relaxants based on the patients’ symptoms.
  3. HEA Group: This group met with physical therapists to learn home exercises. They were instructed to do these exercises up to eight times a day.

In this study, there were no negative effects reported by those who received chiropractic care. In fact, the conclusion of the entire study was the SMT was more effective than medication in both the short and long term.

The outcome of this study proved that medication was 42 percent less effective than spinal manipulation treatments. The study also mentioned that the participants who were on medication continued to take and increase their medication dosage.

Negative Side Effects of Medication

Continued use of medications often causes your body to become immune to their effects, which can lead to drug abuse and dependence. Overusing medications can result in a variety of health issues, including:

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Heart attack
  • Constipation
  • Digestive problems
  • Increased pain
  • Headaches
  • Depression
  • Liver toxicity
  • Weakened immune system

These side-effects can be avoided when you seek chiropractic care first.

How A Healthy Spine Reduces Pain

Having a healthy spine is important because every nerve in your body is interconnected with your spine. Messages are sent from your brain to all parts of your body through your spine, and when the spine is misaligned, those messages become weakened. Pinched nerves or other spinal problem can result in pain or discomfort. When a chiropractor correctly aligns your spine through spinal manipulation, those messages are sent and received properly.

Chiropractic techniques, like spinal manipulation, promote your body’s ability to heal itself so you don’t have to rely on surgery or medication. For over 20 years, Dr. Doyle has dedicated himself to creating natural, effective treatment plans for a variety of patient needs. These treatments don’t simply hide your symptoms, they repair the problem. Dr. Doyle uses a combination of chiropractic, acupuncture, and complementary therapies that provide safe, long-lasting solutions.

The Unexpected Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Posted on 04.13.18 |

Justin, TX chiropractorMost patients seek out chiropractic care for pain management or neck and back issues—but they often discover unexpected health benefits in the process! This is no surprise to us, as chiropractic treatment is based on the premise that the whole body works better when the spine and musculoskeletal system is in proper alignment.

When the vertebrae and discs are all working together correctly, the spinal cord and nervous system function better, to keep your body running like it should. For example, patients often report improved digestive, immune, reproductive, and cardiovascular health.

Are you struggling with pain and medical conditions that hinder your quality of life? Roanoke, Keller, and Justin, TX chiropractor Cody Doyle would love the opportunity to help. Call our office at 817-767-5430 to learn more about chiropractic care.

Better Digestive Health

Chiropractic adjustments can’t take the place of good dietary choices, but they may help ease the symptoms of disorders such as acid reflux, heartburn, or irritable bowel syndrome. Sometimes digestive malfunctions can be caused or worsened by compressed nerves, stemming from poor spinal alignment. When proper spinal alignment is achieved, nerve signals can more effectively regulate digestive functions. Many patients who come in for back and neck problems are pleasantly surprised when their digestive woes become less frequent or less severe.

Improved Immune Function

Patients with environmental allergies and poor immune function often respond positively to chiropractic and complementary therapies, (such as acupuncture and myofascial release therapy). Autoimmune diseases and severe allergies cannot be cured, of course, but improved blood flow and nervous system function can strengthen the body’s natural defenses.

Reproductive Health

Did you know that the American Pregnancy Association recommends chiropractic treatment for women who struggle with infertility? All of our organ systems rely on messages that travel through the spine, and that includes the hormones that induce ovulation and encourage conception. Chiropractic adjustments unblock compressed nerves and increase blood circulation to the reproductive organs. This also means men suffering from low testosterone and erectile dysfunction may experience better blood flow and circulation with regular chiropractic therapy.

Better Respiration and Cardiovascular Health

The respiratory airway, lungs, and heart rely on messages to and from the brain, which all travel through the spine. When that message-way is not impeded by subluxations in the spine, cardiovascular health and lung function often improve. Some medical conditions, such as asthma and high blood pressure, have been shown to improve with chiropractic treatments. WebMD reported on a study that provides evidence that a specific type of chiropractic adjustment can have the same effect as a dose of blood pressure medicine.

A Path Toward Wellness

Spinal adjustments are not a cure for conditions like infertility, high blood pressure, or acid reflux—but they can help your whole body function and heal properly. When musculoskeletal problems are accompanied by other medical conditions, many patients find that their capacity for healing improves in ways they did not anticipate.

If you have conditions that cause you ongoing pain or distress, chiropractic treatments may give your body the extra health boost it needs to respond better to healthy lifestyle choices and medical interventions. Dr. Doyle has helped thousands of patients achieve better health through chiropractic adjustments and complementary treatments, such as myofascial release therapy and acupuncture.

4 Ways to Improve Degenerative Disc Disease

Posted on 09.12.17 |

X-ray highlighting Roanoke degenerative disc diseaseThe term degenerative disc disease is somewhat misleading, as it is not technically a disease, nor is it strictly degenerative. However, it can be corrected with holistic treatment and lifestyle changes.

The bones of the spine are called vertebrae. The discs between those bones act as shock absorbers. As we age, the discs between the vertebrae lose fluid, drying them out and making them shrink. Also, wear and tear accumulates over the years and adds to the problem.

However, other things can cause damage as well. For instance, lack of exercise, smoking, hormone imbalances, and high impact physical activity can cause disc degeneration.

As fluid decreases within the spinal discs, the outer shells deteriorate. This prevents it from absorbing shock and places pressure on the lumbar spine, cervical spine, or thoracic spine.

The additional pressure and lack of shock absorption can lead to chronic neck and back pain. It can also lead to limited mobility and tingling in the extremities. Pain may worsen during certain activities, making sitting, bending, or twisting difficult.

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is one of the most common causes of back and neck pain. In fact, it affects nearly 30 million Americans each year. Further damage to a patient with DDD can lead to a herniated disc.

Here, Dr. Cody Doyle discusses treatment options that can reduce your pain and improve your quality of life.

Chiropractic Care for Degenerative Disc Disease

The spine protects your entire central nervous system, which is responsible for all the muscle and organ functions within your body.

  • As the intervertebral discs shrink, the bones in your spine become misaligned. This triggers the nerves in your spine to misfire, resulting in pain, fatigue, and a host of other symptoms.

Through chiropractic care, Dr. Doyle performs spinal adjustments to promote healing. During these adjustments, he uses a variety of manual and mechanical techniques to gently correct misalignments.

Acupuncture to Improve Back Pain

Proper energy flow in the body affects your performance. Disruption of your energy flow increases pain and inflammation.

Acupuncture is a holistic treatment that involves inserting thin, sterilized needles into certain acupoints on the skin. When properly placed, these hair-thin needles stimulate and encourage proper energy flow.

Based on traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is a proven, effective tool to reduce neck and back pain.

Physical Therapy for Degenerative Disc Disease

Building up the muscles in your back can help your spine stay properly aligned and increases your mobility and flexibility.

Back and neck injuries frequently require the avoidance of strenuous exercise for a period of time. However, some exercises and stretching can be tremendously helpful.

Dr. Doyle can prescribe physical therapy exercises that you can perform at home or at the gym to strengthen your muscles. He can also provide myofascial release therapy. This treatment is a deep muscle massage technique that releases tension and improves your flexibility and function.

Lifestyle Improvements

Smoking and obesity can worsen degenerative disc disease. Dr. Doyle encourages the avoidance of smoking and tobacco products.

Dr. Doyle can prescribe a weight loss treatment plan designed specifically for your body that helps alleviate pressure on your spine. He also offers ear acupuncture, which speeds up your metabolism and promotes effective weight loss. In addition, he offers recommendations regarding vitamins and herbal supplements. Moreover, he can let you know about foods you should incorporate in your diet or avoid.
