Stay Ahead of Degenerative Disk Disease With These Tips

Posted on 06.1.19 |

Many of our patients come to our Roanoke, TX chiropractic clinic seeking relief from degenerative disk disease (DDD). The condition arises when an individual has a damaged vertebral disc that causes pain. The spinal disks buffer impacts to the body. Over time, the spinal disks can become worn. While many of the causes are often linked to aging, lifestyle, posture, and health-related habits play a key role in when symptoms of this condition arise.

Our team at Doyle Chiropractic & Acupuncture can help alleviate symptoms at our Roanoke, TX practice. If you were recently diagnosed with degenerative disk disease, many of these tips can help you manage or alleviate DDD-related symptoms.

Tips for Preventing Degenerative Disk Disease

Age is a leading risk factor for DDD. We can’t prevent aging, of course, but we can try to avoid activities and habits that increase the risk for DDD. Injury is a leading cause of this condition. If you engage in sports or weight lifting that puts undue stress on your vertebrae, you may be increasing your chances for developing degenerative disk disease. When playing contact sports, think about the long-term effects the repetitive impacts can have on your joints and back.

Exercises like running, swimming, and biking are less likely to cause injury to your back. When choosing which sports you want to engage in, keep the long-term health of your back in mind. One standard for exercising that we recommend following is set by The American Council on Exercise, which recommends taking a 30-minute walk (or similar activity) five or more times per week.

If you regularly lift weights, learn to use good form. This involves learning about body mechanics (exercises that improve posture, stamina, and coordination). Hiring a physical trainer is one way to learn how to exercise in a way that compliments your body’s natural movements. Yoga also teaches mindfulness about body posture and balance.

Other useful tips include:

  • Quit smoking: Smoking is linked to a host of health problems, including disk degeneration.
  • Maintain a healthy weight: Dr. Doyle may recommend diet and weight loss as part of your treatment plan. If he does, take it seriously. Individuals with a BMI of 25 or higher are at increased risk for degenerative disk disorder. Weight loss will also translate directly to lower discomfort and back pain.
  • Eat a bone-healthy diet: Vitamin D is proven to promote bone health. Calcium, zinc, and iron are also known to help maintain healthy bones. Dr. Doyle may recommend other supplements as well to promote disk health.

If you are diagnosed with DDD, Dr. Doyle will provide comprehensive care to address your symptoms. Dr. Doyle has over two decades of experience in treating pain with alternative medicine and other methods. His treatment options may include:

  • Chiropractic care
  • Acupuncture
  • Massage therapy
  • Education and information

You do not have to live with the pain of degenerative disk disease. Unlike other parts of the body, the discs receive very little blood supply, meaning that once a disc is injured it cannot repair itself. Dr. Doyle has more than 20 years of experience diagnosing and treating degenerative disk disease. To schedule an exploratory exam, contact Dr. Doyle at (817) 767-5430 or visit our website to set up an initial appointment.

Drug-Free Pain Management for Sports Injuries

Posted on 05.1.19 |

old golf sports injuriesDo you play golf in Trophy Club, shoot hoops at the park, or jog the beautiful nature trails that crisscross Northeast Tarrant County? Maybe you play volleyball or softball at the rec center. Roanoke, Trophy Club, Southlake, and Grapevine feature a wide variety of outdoor activities to enjoy — and Dr. Doyle hopes you’re taking advantage of them.

Should you twist an ankle or strain a muscle while trying to have fun, you may need to see a doctor. If pain persists, visit Dr. Doyle. Our Roanoke office provides our Trophy Club neighbors with holistic pain management, so you can heal quickly and get back to enjoying the activities you love.

Common Sports Injuries

The most common sports injuries are sprains and strains, but they only scratch the surface of the full list. Other common sports injuries you may experience include:

  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Knee injuries
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations
  • Swollen muscles

Some of our patients continue to have pain long after an injury. For instance, a low back injury sustained during high school sports could plague you with pain and stiffness in adulthood. Dr. Doyle may use chiropractic, acupuncture, or a combination of these with or without muscle stim and other holistic therapies to treat your pain.

Before Dr. Doyle can develop your treatment plan for pain relief, however, he must diagnose the source of your pain. Your initial interview and exam will take about an hour, and at the end of the appointment we will give you a proposed treatment plan. Lori in the front office will file your insurance, if you have chiropractic coverage.

“Does it work?”

We live in a society that questions the validity of holistic medicine. The truth is, you have to try it to find out if chiropractic and/or acupuncture will work well for pain management, for your unique case. Mounting research in both acupuncture and chiropractic prove the effectiveness of the therapies, whether provided separately or together.

“Acute and chronic chiropractic patients experienced better outcomes in pain, functional disability, and patient satisfaction; clinically important differences in pain and disability improvement were found for chronic patients.”

Haas et al (2005), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics

Side Effects of Sports Injuries

The full extent of a sports injury is not always immediately obvious. In addition, some injuries develop over time due to repetitive motions, like passing a football or bending the knees when riding a bike. Holistic pain management treatment can often reduce or alleviate these types of pain, as well.

Not sure if you injured yourself? Some of the symptoms you may experience are:

  • Swelling, inflammation, or tenderness in particular areas
  • Stiffness that limits movement
  • Acute pain when you make certain movements
  • Extreme weakness in the arms or legs
  • Inability to place any weight on a hand or leg

If you experience dizziness, headaches, or disorientation, seek either emergency assistance or to schedule an appointment with your GP. If your symptoms persist after seeing a physician, schedule a visit with Dr. Doyle. His therapies can help reduce or relieve chronic headaches, migraines, and vertigo, in many cases.

Avoid Long-Term Use of Pain Medications

Doctors often recommend ibuprofen or acetaminophen to alleviate pain and swelling. If you’re prescribed an opioid, you might be concerned with the effects that the addictive drug can have on your health and life. Opioids are not the healthiest treatment for ongoing pain. Using ibuprofen long term can also cause health concerns. For many patients, chiropractic treatment and acupuncture provide sufficient pain management so that long-term pain meds are not needed.

For drug-free pain management, call us at 817-767-5430 or submit an email via the contact form. Dr. Doyle and our team look forward to seeing you back on the greens, the courts, the trails, and the fields very soon!

Dr. Doyle’s Chiro Tools

Posted on 04.25.19 |

chiro appointment with chiro tools used to naturally relieve painDr. Doyle, your Roanoke TX local chiro, uses blended therapies to help patients manage pain and to promote healing. When you visit our office, the doctor may use one or more of these tools in your treatment.

ArthroStim

This tool helps to remap neurological paths, thus assisting with the relearning of certain movements. It is often used as part of an overall therapeutic process to help patients regain the function of joints and muscles. Many patients also love that it doesn’t make the loud popping noise associated with some other tools.

Muscle Stim

Muscle stim create electrical muscle stimulation. It is perhaps most commonly used for decreasing pain and swelling. When in use, it holds the muscle in contraction and then relaxes it. It may do so for roughly a few seconds at a time, depending on the settings the doctor prefers to use. This helps to break the spasm cycle, which is often the source of chronic or intense pain and stiffness. Muscle stim also activates blood flow to a specific region, which promotes faster healing.

Activator

This is one of the more traditional chiropractor tools that while effective is not often used in Dr. Doyle’s office. The activator adjustment tool transmits a low amount of force into the spine to assist with realignment. While it is different from the ArthroStim, the effect or overall benefit is the same. The ArthroStim just tends to make treatment easier.

Drop Table

Sometimes called the breakaway table, the drop table assists chiropractors with using gravity to the patient’s advantage. The drop table actually relieves gravity, allowing the doctor to send the body into momentary free fall with a sudden stop. This stop mobilizes joints in a different way than a standard adjustment, but has the same effect. Dr. Doyle recommends this especially for patients who are in too much pain to tolerate side posture adjustments, because it does not put stress on additional muscles the way a side posture adjustment may do.

Microcurrent

Also known as frequent specific microcurrent, this tool uses micro-amperage current to treat pain. Because there are other effective tools available, Dr. Doyle does not use this at his office.

Ultrasound

Another tool not used at Dr. Doyle’s office is the ultrasound. Chiropractors use this to create sound waves that radiate heat into the joints and soft tissues. This provides a micro-massage that reduces back stiffness, muscle soreness, and other symptoms.

The Massager

An actual massager is more commonly used at this Roanoke TX local chiro office and has very much the same effects as micro-massage. It provides stimulus to the central nervous system, which helps to repattern chronic issues. Therapeutic benefits also include working out soreness and increasing circulation. However, the number one reason patients enjoy this tool is because it feels great.

Acupuncture Needles

Some patients respond best to acupuncture. Professionals often use electrical currents to add further stimulation during the process, but Dr. Doyle practices a more Japanese style of acupuncture. The effectiveness of this procedure relies less on stimulation and more on the needles and their positions. Acupuncture and chiropractic adjustment may be the best treatment for some patients.

When it comes to pain management, potentially addictive medications are not the only option. Chiropractic care and acupuncture may provide long-term relief without the risks. For more information about your Roanoke TX local chiro, contact Dr. Doyle at 817-767-5430. Your pain-free days may be only a phone call away.

5 Tips for Easing into a New Fitness Routine

Posted on 01.23.19 |

Starting a New Fitness RoutineSometimes, new year’s resolutions may have a slow start (hey, we’re only human!). If you promised yourself that 2019 would be the year to get back in shape, there’s good news: you still have plenty of time! Any day, week, or month is a great time to begin healthier habits that can last for a lifetime. If it’s been a while since you worked out, starting a new fitness routine can come with some aches and pains as your body adjusts to a new activity. Luckily, your Trophy Club, TX chiropractor has tips to help you ease into your new routine, protect your body, and prevent discomfort that keeps you at home with a heating pad instead of out breaking a sweat.

We believe fitness is one important part of overall wellness: if you’re looking to achieve total wellness through drug-free, surgical-free alternative care, schedule a consultation with Trophy Club, TX chiropractor Dr. Cody Doyle. Dr. Doyle offers alternative treatment options such as acupuncture, chiropractic care and complementary therapies to help you achieve a healthier, happier quality of life. We can even accept payment from most HSA or FSA funds! Call our office at 817-767-5430 to schedule a consultation.

Don’t overdo it.

We know it’s hard to pace yourself when you are excited about getting back in to shape. When you’re ready for fast results, pushing yourself to the limit can seem like the quickest way to get there. But unfortunately, your body can’t easily go from zero to one hundred. When you go too far or too fast before proper conditioning, your body is more likely to experience injuries, pain, muscles soreness and fatigue. It’s also easier to give up on a work out program when you’re constantly dealing with pain — and your mind can experience that same burn-out, too! Take things slow, and know that each step, lift, or pedal is getting you closer to your goal.

Make it manageable.

When you start your new fitness routine, give yourself realistic goals that allow some flexibility –especially at first. A goal to work out five days a week sounds great, but when you have a stressful day at work or feel under the weather, you could become discouraged from missing your weekly goal. With fitness, it’s a good idea to set a goal that’s attainable but still requires persistence. Instead of five days a week, start with just two or three and build over time.

Flexibility is key.

You should combine both cardiovascular conditioning and strength training to create a well-rounded fitness routine. But the third key ingredient of every fitness plan? Stretching. It is just as important when considering your overall health, wellbeing and agility. Stretching can protect you from injury and improve your performance; Dr. Doyle regularly recommends at-home stretching exercises as part of our complementary therapies for patients to help heal and loosen up tight or sore muscles. Stretching is best performed at the end of your workout, when your muscles are warm and can stretch more easily.

Focus on form over speed.

Jogging, yoga, cycling, tennis—whatever activity you’ve taken up, learning proper form is the foundation for a successful fitness hobby. Not only will proper form prevent injuries or accidents, but it will allow you to build and improve your abilities over time.

Listen to your body and treat it well.

Exercise is a great way to improve your physical health and refresh your mental health. Don’t think of it as a “punishment,” but as a reward to help you live healthier and longer! To remain flexible and pain-free, schedule regular wellness appointments with Trophy Club, TX chiropractor, Dr. Cody Doyle. He helps athletes and fitness junkies get over injuries through myofascial release therapy, chiropractic adjustments, or complementary therapies that improve the body’s natural functions so it can heal itself quicker. He can help you take care of your body as you begin your new fitness journey, too.

If you are looking for holistic care from a knowledgeable and experienced care provider, call to schedule your consultation with Dr. Doyle. Serving the Trophy Club, TX area and beyond, Dr. Doyle can offer chiropractic, acupuncture, and other complementary therapies that improve your body’s natural alignment and functions, allowing faster healing and pain relief. Top Reasons to Visit a Local Chiropractor in Roanoke, TX

Posted on 01.4.19 |

Have you often wondered if you should add a local chiropractor in Roanoke, TX to your list of healthcare partners? Many individuals contact Dr. Cody Doyle at (817) 767-5430 to schedule exploratory exams to determine if chiropractic care is the right choice for them. Want to know some of the more common reasons patients prefer having a local chiro on their side? Read on for insights.

1. You were in a car accident.

Car crashes often result in some kind of trauma to the body. Even if you walked away from your accident only a little bruised, you may have suffered health problems that could arise later. For instance, many crash survivors report lingering back and neck pain long after the incident.

A local chiro can help bring your body back to a state of proper balance through spinal manipulation and related treatments. Each visit is an opportunity for you to experience enhanced healing through a safe, nonsurgical approach.

2. You have chronic pain.

Maybe your pain ranges from your lower to middle back. Perhaps you have discomfort in your hips or knees. Regardless, you deserve relief from pain that does not include increasingly high doses of prescription medications or over-the-counter pills.

A chiropractor will discuss your unique pain and then use manipulations to address the underlying problem. Dr. Doyle may also suggest other alternative medicine approaches such as acupuncture to complement your treatment plan.

3. You were diagnosed with allergies.

Does it seem like your world turns into a fog every spring or fall? If allergies leave you groggy and uncomfortable for weeks or months out of the year, talk to your chiropractor. Chiropractic medicine has proven helpful for allergy sufferers of all ages. Even young children with the first signs of allergies can explore chiropractic treatment to lessen the effects of their allergies to pollen, dander, dust, etc.

4. Your job requires repetitive motions.

Do you find yourself repeating the same motion again and again while at work? Repetitive actions can quickly lead to body issues. Even sitting all day and working at the computer can become a source of hip problems, back problems, shoulder issues, and chronically tight muscles.

To help restore your body to a more natural state, Dr. Doyle will perform the appropriate type of adjustment treatment on you at each visit. That way, you can return to your work feeling less fatigued. You may even discover that you start to enjoy work more because it does not leave you as exhausted or worn out at the end of a day.

5. You are trying to lose weight.

The weight loss journey often includes a trip to a local chiro for individuals in Roanoke, TX who are trying to jumpstart a healthier way of life. Poor nutrition can have an effect on the way you carry yourself over time. A chiropractor can activate your body and awaken its natural abilities to heal. This, in turn, can help you shed unwanted pounds because exercise will become easier. When applied in tandem with improved nutrition, chiropractic medicine can be an excellent weight loss treatment tool.

6. You experience migraines.

Do you experience migraines once a month, like clockwork? Do they come out of the blue? Either way, you should consider making a phone call to a chiropractor. Left untreated, migraines can reduce your quality of life. Why let pain steal your days or nights when chiropractic care can provide relief?

Do you have arm pain that won’t go away?

Posted on 12.31.18 |

Pain in one or both arms can be caused by various factors, and pain has many descriptions. If one or both of your arms have hurt for sometime and the pain isn’t subsiding, it’s time to seek professional medical attention. While muscle soreness will usually go away over time, nerve pain, tendon tears, and some other issues require treatment.

If you experience pain in your left arm only, and you also have shortness of breath, chest pain, or feel dizzy, call 911. These symptoms can indicate a heart attack.

Arm pain that develops immediately after a blow or fall may signify a broken bone, torn tendon, or sprain. In some situations, non-surgical treatment and pain management techniques can effectively address these conditions. However, severe cases may need surgical treatment.

To schedule a chiropractic or acupuncture appointment with Dr. Doyle in Roanoke, call 817-767-5430. Dr. Doyle can examine your arms, shoulders, wrists, and back, and provide a treatment plan to treat the underlying cause of your pain.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis usually occurs after stressing the arm or shoulder, when a tendon becomes inflamed due to overuse or injury. Tendonitis may be referred to as tennis elbow when the elbow is affected, though the wrist or shoulder may be the areas of concern. You might experience redness or notice a lump on your arm. Rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and applying ice can help. Usually, pain subsides after a few weeks of limited use. However, some cases of tendonitis can last for many months. Natural herbal remedies and acupuncture can help reduce irritation and pain. Joint manipulation with chiropractic treatment may also help relieve the symptoms of tendonitis.

Bursitis

Bursitis is another common cause of arm pain. There are many bursae in your shoulder and elbow. These liquid-filled sacs can become inflamed if irritated or injured. Extra liquid fills a bursa and puts pressure on surrounding tissues. You’ll notice swelling at the joint if bursitis is present. Rest and ice can help in the first few days after symptoms develop. After two days, try applying dry heat, taking a hot bath, and massaging the area to ease swelling and pain. Bursitis may subside after a few hours or days.Recurring bursitis is called chronic, and it can last weeks or months. Chiropractic therapy may help loosen the area around the bursae, ultimately reducing friction and tightness to reduce pain.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome affects the wrist and is usually caused by repeated overuse. Typists are known to develop carpal tunnel syndrome, due to years of the same positioning and motion of the wrists.Symptoms include pain, weakness, numbness, and tingling in the wrist and up the arm. Wearing a splint can help wrists rest and heal, but chronic pain from carpal tunnel may necessitate surgery. However, chiropractic and acupuncture therapy can also be effective, depending on your case.

Pinched Nerve or Herniated Disc

A pinched nerve or herniated disc can cause arm pain that includes numbness, burning, tingling, and weakness. These conditions can be diagnosed by a chiropractor or physician. In some cases, chiropractic treatment can realign the spine and eliminate a pinched nerve. Pain management may include chiropractic care, acupuncture, and/or using over-the-counter anti-inflammatories.

Don’t Suffer with Arm Pain

Whether you require pain management or a more permanent correction to relieve your arm pain, Dr. Doyle wants to help you. Call our office, located in Roanoke, near Keller and Southlake, for an appointment.

Looking for an alternative to NSAIDs and opioids for pain management?

Posted on 10.20.18 |

pain management without nsaidsIf you’ve gone to your general practitioner or pain management doctor seeking relief from chronic pain, you’ve probably been told to take NSAIDS, acetaminophen, or opioids. All of these drugs come with potentially serious negative side effects, particularly if they’re taken long-term or outside of how they are prescribed. If you struggle with pain and are concerned about how NSAIDS and opioids could negatively affect your health, you do have alternatives. Dr. Cody Doyle of Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture in Roanoke, Tx offers holistic pain management options to relieve a wide range of pain, including chronic pain.

Learn how acupuncture can help with chronic pain relief.

Learn how chiropractic can help with chronic pain relief.

Why should you consider holistic pain management treatment? Because pharmaceutical treatments pose many risks. Let’s explore the side effects of NSAIDs, acetaminophen, and opiates.

NSAIDs

Called “n-seds,” NSAIDs stands for non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. They help control moderate pain and inflammation. NSAIDs include:

  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil)
  • Naproxin (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprelan, Naprosyn)
  • Celecoxib (Celebrex)
  • Diclofenac
  • Etodolac
  • Indometacin
  • Ketoprofen
  • Ketrolac
  • Nabumetone
  • Oxaprozin
  • Piroxicam
  • Salsalate
  • Sulindac
  • Tolmetin

The most common side effects of NSAIDs are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and other gastrointestinal issues, as well as drowsiness and dizziness. They can also cause fluid retention, decrease in appetite, rash, and headache. However, chronic use of these medications can lead to kidney and liver failure, ulcers, and increased bleeding with injury or surgery. Some people are allergic to NSAIDS, and allergic reaction generally involves shortness of breath or other breathing problems. Asthmatics are at higher risk for an NSAID allergy.

Oddly, kids given aspirin for the flu or chicken pox may develop Reye’s syndrome, a liver disease that can be fatal.

Elderly patients face an increased risk for heart attack and stroke with all NSAIDs, except low-dose aspirin. People who have undergone coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery should not take NSAIDs; they can cause complications.

Acetaminophen

While acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not an NSAID, it does have the potential to cause negative side effects, particularly in the liver. People who consume a higher-than-average amount of alcohol should steer clear of acetaminophen, as well. The FDA suggests 325 mg or less per pill/capsule, which is what regular-strength Tylenol contains. Extra-strength Tylenol has 500 mg. The normal daily dosage is up to eight extra-strength Tylenol, which is 4 grams of acetaminophen.

Note that a regimen alternating NSAIDs and acetaminophen is often suggested, for lower dosage with similar pain relief results.

Opiates and Opioids (Narcotics)

prescription medicationOpioids are strong pain killers that alter the brain’s understanding of pain by depressing the central nervous system, thus immediately relieving discomfort. Opioids may be prescribed to control a cough, treat diarrhea, or even to help a person overcome addiction to narcotics.  When used for pain relief, opioids are sometimes referred to as analgesic narcotics.

One of Dr. Doyle’s patients reports: “I was prescribed a bottle of 150 hydrocodone pills to control gall bladder pain until I could undergo surgery. I had an insurance situation that forced me to put the surgery on hold. The opiates controlled the pain, but I was a zombie under the influence of hydrocodone. I could not work or function. After my surgery, I had some complications that caused chronic pain and was prescribed more hydrocodone, then later, tramadol and Tylenol 3, which has codeine. Each drug had side effects that exacerbated other symptoms. Dr. Doyle helped me address the underlying issues that caused my pain: leaky gut syndrome, chronic constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome. Most doctors don’t believe in the science behind leaky gut syndrome, and there was no pharmaceutical treatment for IBS that worked on me. It took me a year to find Dr. Doyle after my surgery – and all that time I was on opioids. With them, the pain was debilitating. Also with them, I was a zombie. As a small business owner, my entire life was negatively affected. With Dr. Doyle’s treatment and time, now I no longer needed pain medications. I believe that if I had not turned to acupuncture and Dr. Doyle’s holistic methods, I’d still be on opiates and NSAIDs. Instead, I’m productive and healthy!” – Shauna Duty, Roanoke, Tx

Opiates are drugs made from opium in poppy plants. Opioids are synthetic or semi-synthetic drugs that bind to opioid receptors in the brain. Today, the term “opioid” is used for both natural and synthetic opioids. These drugs include:

  • Morphine
  • Heroin (semi-synthetic)
  • Codeine
  • Oxycodone
  • Oxycontin (semi-synthetic)
  • Hydrocodone
  • Hydromorphone
  • Tramadol
  • Oxycontin
  • Fentanyl
  • Methadone

Tramadol, oxycontin, and fentanyl are synthetic opioids. These can be stronger than natural opiates. For example, fentanyl is 50 times stronger than morphine. A derivation of fentanyl, carfentanil, is 100 times stronger than fentanyl.

Opioid Addiction

Often, people in chronic pain become addicted to opioids for relief. A mental addiction develops. Seeking comfort, they increase the dosage without a doctor’s approval can lead to serious physical and psychological issues. Prescription opioids are often sold on the street, illegally.

The problem is, as a central nervous system depressant, opioids can stop a person’s heart, causing death. They also alter the heart, lungs, brain, and many other vital organs. Even first-time illegal use can cause immediate death, coma, or an erratic heartbeat.

Death caused by overdose of opioids gas surpassed the height of deaths by gun violence (1993) and auto accidents (1972). In 2016, over 63 thousand people died from overdose; two-thirds from opioid overdose. Today, drug overdose is the primary cause of accidental death in our country.

Though Texas is on the low end of states where opioid overdoses occur, our numbers are on the rise – even in Tarrant and Dallas counties. Of the top 25 American cities with the highest opioid overdose fatality rate, four are in Texas.

People who are abusing opioids often show symptoms like sleeping too much or not being able to sleep. They may suffer with anxiety, depression, and mood swings. When battling opioid addiction, withdrawals will occur. If a person is fighting addition to more than opioids (additional drugs or alcohol), serious health risks can occur. A medical professional can help create a plan, with medications to help an addict successfully overcome withdrawal.

Relief for Inflammation

Posted on 10.15.18 |

Male runner with blue shoes and ankle painRemember the time in your life when you were the healthiest you had ever been? You could do it all! Walking? Easy. Running? No problem. Playing sports or swimming at the beach? Easy. You probably felt strong and invincible. When we are young, it is easy to jump right up out of bed, go for a jog, keep up with the little ones, or stand for long periods of time. As the years go by, our bodies can go through a lot, and our physical condition changes. At Doyle Chiropractic, patients from Keller, TX, and the surrounding area come to Dr. Cody Doyle seeking relief from pain as a result of injury, aging, or specific physical conditions. Sometimes these conditions have something in common: inflammation.

What Is Inflammation?

Often back, joint, and muscle pain can be attributed to inflammation, which affects our bodies in several ways. Those who suffer from this condition sometimes experience swelling, painful joints, redness, joints that are warm to the touch, and stiffness which limits movement. Inflammation can also present flu-like symptoms: fatigue, fever, chills, loss of appetite, or headache.

Inflammation occurs when our white blood cells work to fight off infection and inflammatory substances in the body. However, because of arthritis, the body automatically starts fighting by sending an inflammatory response – even though there is no infection to fight. This is a condition you may have heard of before: autoimmune disease. Unfortunately, when the body starts fighting itself, the joints begin to swell, become painful, and the cartilage begins to wear down. Autoimmune disease can result in damage to the body’s tissue and organs over time.

Reversing the Effects of Inflammation and Arthritis

Dr. Doyle has treated patients who suffer with inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis, and lupus. These chronic conditions can be managed to reduce pain and increase range of motion. If you suffer with swollen, painful joints or have difficulty walking or gripping everyday items, it may be time for an evaluation and discover the therapies Dr. Doyle offers that can bring relief.

Following your evaluation, the doctor will recommend specific treatments for you. Among them, ultrasound is an option – a heat therapy that works on muscles and tissues that surround your joints. Over time this treatment can reduce the pain of inflammation and increase your range of motion. Acupuncture is another approach using holistic medicine that uses strategically-placed needles to promote healing by improving blood flow to effected joints and muscle groups. Chiropractic and myofascial release treatments involve a hands-on approach that helps align your musculoskeletal system, promoting flexibility and pain reduction. Dr. Doyle can also recommend exercises you can do at home to increase your flexibility, strength, and overall wellness as well as nutritional guidance and herbal therapies that may help reduce the inflammation in your body.

Take the Next Step and Call Today

The good news is, there is relief for the chronic pain of inflammation. There are options that can reduce its symptoms and enable you to return to a higher level of function and comfort – and possibly to the activities you enjoy most. Dr. Cody Doyle and the team at Doyle Chiropractic offer options for treatment and care that can help you address arthritis pain and inflammation. Contact us today at 817-767-5430 to schedule an appointment at our office located at 295 W. Byron Nelson Blvd., #212, Roanoke, TX, 76262. During your visit, Dr. Doyle will evaluate your individual needs and recommend a course of treatment just for you. We look forward to seeing you in our office soon.

Why Are My Joints So Stiff?

Argyle TX chiropractorStiff joints are a problem nearly everyone will experience at some point as they age. Interestingly enough, they are not always caused by the same underlying problem. How can you tell whether your stiff joints are something that requires treatment? Should you try to exercise your stiff joints more or less to make them work better? Below are several possible causes of stiff joints.

If your stiff joints are starting to slow down your active lifestyle, visit Argyle TX chiropractor Dr. Cody Doyle. Call us at 817-767-5430 to make an appointment. We carefully assess your unique symptoms and employ many treatment options to help you recover flexibility and comfort.

The Natural Result of Aging

As we age, our cartilage becomes drier and less flexible. Our bodies also stop making as much synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant to keep your joints flexible. If your joint stiffness is caused by age, the best way to deal with it is to keep using the affected joints as much as possible, since movement helps keep the joint healthy.

Morning Joint Stiffness

When you are still for long periods of time, your synovial fluid can’t do its job properly. That’s why you might notice feeling a bit like the Tin Man when you first wake up in the morning. This is perfectly natural and not cause for alarm. Morning joint stiffness should go away slowly once you get moving again.

Changes in Barometric Pressure

It may seem like an old-wives tale that you can feel an imminent change in weather “in your bones.” However, many people can feel a drop in barometric pressure in their joints. This type of drop usually happens just before a low-pressure weather system, such as storm. If you feel bodily changes just before a storm, this does not necessarily mean you need treatment, but it may help you know which joints you should keep an eye on for future treatment.

Osteoarthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative arthritis, often develops at a number of places on our bodies where two bones meet: the knees, the elbows, the wrist. These joints get used over and over, and eventually the flexible cartilage at the ends of the bones starts to wear away. When the cartilage is gone, the bones rub against each other, and this can cause pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion. If osteoarthritis is the cause of your stiff joints, visit Argyle TX chiropractor Dr. Cody Doyle and ask which treatments might help you preserve your cartilage and keep yourself flexible and functional.

Joint Injury from Overuse

If you are a very active person who is experiencing stiffness in a joint that you use regularly, you may have injured the joint by overusing it. Bursitis and tendonitis are very common among athletes but there are treatments that can help you take better care of your joints.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Other Less-Common Types of Arthritis

Another form of arthritis can occur when your immune system attacks the synovial fluid of your joint. Rheumatoid arthritis usually affects the hands and wrists, but can attack any joint in your body and cause pain and stiffness. If your joints are stiff and inflamed, ask your doctor whether your symptoms sound more like RA or OA, as the treatments for these types of arthritis are not the same.

There are a few other forms of arthritis that can cause stiff joints, including: psoriatic arthritis, infectious arthritis, ankylosing arthritis, and gout. These conditions have very different treatments than RA or OA, so visit your doctor if you notice unusual pain and stiffness anywhere in your body.

Your Joints – Use Them or Lose Them!

Posted on 08.27.18 |

Argyle chiropractorJoint pain and joint degeneration (osteoarthritis) has long been thought of as a natural consequence of aging and hard use. Cartilage breaks down in the joints over time. Repetitive use of certain joints can make them more prone to arthritis. Think of your grandmother, whose hands became gnarled and fingers became twisted after years of sewing and knitting. Or Shaquille O’Neal developing arthritis in his big toe after running, jumping, and dunking basketballs for years. Some joints are more prone to arthritis if they are used more than others.

But arthritis can also be a result of under-use. Movement in the joint helps protect it from degeneration. Cartilage gets its nutrients and retains its elasticity from using the joint. Underuse can cause further deterioration and pain.

Do you suffer from painful joints or degenerative arthritis? Argyle chiropractor Dr. Cody Doyle can help you stay active and reduce your pain. Call Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture at 817-767-5430 to make an appointment.

Exercise as a Treatment for Arthritis

One of the best ways to protect your joints is to keep them active. Motion helps your joints stay healthy and flexible. Getting regular exercise and taking the time to stretch can help your arthritis symptoms in a number of ways:

  • Exercise helps you maintain a healthy body weight, which can lessen joint pain.
  • Muscle strength helps take pressure off joints.
  • Muscle tissue absorbs shock that may otherwise hit the joints.
  • Stretching helps your damaged joints stay flexible and can reduce swelling.

If you are starting to experience joint degeneration, you can prevent things from getting worse by finding opportunities to exercise that don’t push you past your limits (and into pain). If you used to enjoy running, but now your left knee swells up and stiffens any time you jog, try something lower-impact. Walking, swimming, and cycling can deliver a lower-impact workout that keeps your muscles and joint moving and flexible.

Joint Degeneration Affects the Spine, As Well

Once you get to a point when you’re starting to feel the stiffness or swelling that can indicate osteoarthritis, you should also start thinking about your back. Your spine isn’t just one joint, but 29 individual joints that make up the vertebrae. Just like the other joints in your body, the vertebrae need exercise to keep the cartilage and discs from degenerating.

What kind of exercises are best for protecting the spine from joint degeneration? Any exercise that works out the core muscles of the back and abdomen. Pilates, yoga, and Tai Chi are great for the spine because they incorporate stretching and strengthening, while focusing on spinal alignment. Ultimately, as long as you are up and moving, rather than sitting for long hours every day, you’re going to be strengthening the muscles that support the spine and keep it flexible.
