Is chiropractor treatment only for back pain?

Posted on 11.15.19 |

If you think chiropractor treatment is only for back or neck pain, think again. Your overall health and wellbeing rely on the proper alignment of every system in your body. This includes the entire musculoskeletal structure and the nervous system.

Dr. Cody Doyle at Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture in Roanoke, TX, has over 20 years of experience treating patient with pain, numbness, tingling, and reduced range of motion. He understands the significance of proper alignment in the entire body for overall health and wellness.

When any system of the body is out of alignment, it can affect you in unexpected ways. For instance, problems in the nervous system can trigger or worsen allergies. And while misalignment in the spine is known to cause numerous problems, the body has many joints in the upper and lower extremities that rely on proper alignment.

In addition, Dr. Doyle has several chiropractor treatment options that go above and beyond the manipulation of joints. Some of his most popular treatment options include acupuncture, myofascial release therapy, muscle stimulation, and ultrasound therapy. Other treatments include hot and cold therapy, nutrition and herbal therapies, detox and home exercise programs, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation.

Chiropractor Treatment for Lower Extremity Pain

Problems in the lower extremities typically involve the ankle, knee, and hip joints. Most often, injury (trauma), overuse, or wear and tear cause the problems. However, arthritis or inflammatory issues can cause also cause pain. And an issue with one leg can cause overcompensation of the other leg, which can change your gait and lead to more problems.

Issues with your ankle

The most common ankle issue is a tear, inflammation, or bruising of the muscles, tendons, or ligaments. This is commonly known as an ankle sprain.

Other ankle problems, however, can occur with knee or hip disorders, gait issues, overuse, ill-fitting shoes, and arthritis.

Common ankle issues also include:

  • Plantar fasciitis, which causes stabbing pain near your heel at the bottom of your foot.
  • Achilles tendonitis, which causes pain along the heel bone and back of your ankle.
  • Shin splints, which causes pain in the lower leg that radiates to your foot and ankle.
  • Heel spurs, which are painful bony growths on the arch of the foot or heel bone.

Dr. Doyle will determine the cause of your pain and symptoms with a thorough evaluation. He can then recommend a chiropractor treatment plan that addresses your specific complaints and needs to alleviate your pain.

Knee Conditions

Your knee bears a great deal of your body weight, and it is often the first injured joint. Problems arise from trauma, overuse, poor arch support, and improper use, such as with lifting weights. However, issues can also arise from hip or ankle injuries.

Symptoms of knee problems include stiffness, pain, popping or clicking, swelling, and muscle weakness.

Common knee conditions include:

  • Runner’s knee, which produces pain to the outside and front of the knee when running, jumping, squatting, or kneeling.
  • Degenerative arthritis that affects the cartilage of the knee.
  • Bursitis, which can cause pain on either side of your knee.
  • Strain of the meniscus, MCL, or ACL, which can cause severe pain to the outside, inside, or back of the knee with rotation.
  • Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease, which causes pain and swelling to the front of the knee due to rapid bone growth.

Hip Conditions

The hip joint is a large ball and socket joint responsible for weight-bearing that allows running, jumping, walking, and sitting.

Problems in the hip joint can cause localized pain or pain that radiates through the pelvis and down the leg.

Common chiropractor treatment options Dr. Doyle offers for the hip include:

  • Hip strains, caused by overuse or injury to surrounding hip muscles from injury, overuse, or improper form.
  • Bursitis, which produces a burning sensation or pain on the outside of the hip.
  • Sciatica, represented by pain that radiates through the buttocks and down the leg caused by a pinched nerve in the back.
  • Arthritis, in which the loss of cartilage causes stiff and inflamed joints.
  • Snapping Hip Syndrome, which produces a popping or clicking sound in the hip when walking, stretching, or standing up.

Chiropractor Treatment for Upper Extremity Pain

Numerous treatable problems in the upper extremities can prevent you from enjoying life and completing your job satisfactorily. While injury and trauma can cause problems with your wrists, elbows, hands, and shoulders, the problem is usually related to overuse or repetitive motion, such as with typing, over-exercising, or frequent heavy lifting.

The severity of injury and your activity level greatly affect your pain. Symptoms can include throbbing, dull, aching, or sharp pain followed by tingling and numbness. The pain may radiate down your entire arm, or it could be isolated to one area.

The most common upper extremity issues include:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: This is frequently caused by repetitive use, such as typing, but thyroid disorders, obesity, arthritis, and fluid retention can also cause it. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, or pain in your wrist and hand.
  • Tennis Elbow: This causes pain and swelling in the arm and elbow. While tennis can cause this problem, any repetitive motion of the thumb and first two fingers can be the culprit. This includes knitting, typing, guitar playing, and weightlifting.
  • Nerve Entrapment: Also called a pinched nerve, this condition generally causes pain and weakness in the wrist, elbow, and hand that can travel to your little finger. This is generally caused by injury or improper techniques during repetitive activity.
  • Shoulder pain: Any number of things can cause shoulder pain. Most often, it is the result of rotator cuff injury, repetitive activity, neck injury, or scar tissue. The symptoms can include reduced range of motion and muscle stiffness.

Evaluation of Extremity Problems

Dr. Doyle will perform a series of tests, including diagnostic testing, to determine the cause of your symptoms.

Once he confirms a diagnosis, he will discuss chiropractic treatment options with you and come up with a personalized treatment plan that includes your input.

Your treatment plan may include chiropractic adjustments and one or more modalities to reduce your symptoms.

Chiropractic Treatment Options

Dr. Doyle utilizes numerous treatment modalities to help you with all of your symptoms. Your plan may include one or more of the following:

Why Are My Joints So Stiff?

Posted on 10.10.18 |

Argyle TX chiropractorStiff joints are a problem nearly everyone will experience at some point as they age. Interestingly enough, they are not always caused by the same underlying problem. How can you tell whether your stiff joints are something that requires treatment? Should you try to exercise your stiff joints more or less to make them work better? Below are several possible causes of stiff joints.

If your stiff joints are starting to slow down your active lifestyle, visit Argyle TX chiropractor Dr. Cody Doyle. Call us at 817-767-5430 to make an appointment. We carefully assess your unique symptoms and employ many treatment options to help you recover flexibility and comfort.

The Natural Result of Aging

As we age, our cartilage becomes drier and less flexible. Our bodies also stop making as much synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant to keep your joints flexible. If your joint stiffness is caused by age, the best way to deal with it is to keep using the affected joints as much as possible, since movement helps keep the joint healthy.

Morning Joint Stiffness

When you are still for long periods of time, your synovial fluid can’t do its job properly. That’s why you might notice feeling a bit like the Tin Man when you first wake up in the morning. This is perfectly natural and not cause for alarm. Morning joint stiffness should go away slowly once you get moving again.

Changes in Barometric Pressure

It may seem like an old-wives tale that you can feel an imminent change in weather “in your bones.” However, many people can feel a drop in barometric pressure in their joints. This type of drop usually happens just before a low-pressure weather system, such as storm. If you feel bodily changes just before a storm, this does not necessarily mean you need treatment, but it may help you know which joints you should keep an eye on for future treatment.

Osteoarthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative arthritis, often develops at a number of places on our bodies where two bones meet: the knees, the elbows, the wrist. These joints get used over and over, and eventually the flexible cartilage at the ends of the bones starts to wear away. When the cartilage is gone, the bones rub against each other, and this can cause pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion. If osteoarthritis is the cause of your stiff joints, visit Argyle TX chiropractor Dr. Cody Doyle and ask which treatments might help you preserve your cartilage and keep yourself flexible and functional.

Joint Injury from Overuse

If you are a very active person who is experiencing stiffness in a joint that you use regularly, you may have injured the joint by overusing it. Bursitis and tendonitis are very common among athletes but there are treatments that can help you take better care of your joints.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Other Less-Common Types of Arthritis

Another form of arthritis can occur when your immune system attacks the synovial fluid of your joint. Rheumatoid arthritis usually affects the hands and wrists, but can attack any joint in your body and cause pain and stiffness. If your joints are stiff and inflamed, ask your doctor whether your symptoms sound more like RA or OA, as the treatments for these types of arthritis are not the same.

There are a few other forms of arthritis that can cause stiff joints, including: psoriatic arthritis, infectious arthritis, ankylosing arthritis, and gout. These conditions have very different treatments than RA or OA, so visit your doctor if you notice unusual pain and stiffness anywhere in your body.

Tired of Taking Pills? Treat the Cause of Your Pain

Posted on 01.19.18 |

pain managementAre you sick of endless doctor appointments and prescriptions that haven’t successfully treated your pain? Conventional medical approaches can often identify the causes of pain but they don’t always fix the problem. If your approach to pain management has been dependent on prescriptions, you may be missing out on other potential therapies.

Call Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture at 817-767-5430 to see if alternative therapies can help reduce your pain.

If your medical condition has gone on for too long with little improvement, it may be time to try chiropractic care to reboot and realign the mechanical processes of your body. Whether your condition stems from an injury, overuse, or degeneration, chiropractic care may be able to correct the biomechanical problems that keep your body from healing and functioning properly.

A lot of people mistakenly believe that chiropractic care is only for back and neck conditions, but the truth is that it can help a number of conditions you may not be aware of.

Using chiropractic adjustments and complementary therapies, Dr. Cody Doyle has successfully treated patients suffering from:

  • Arthritis
  • Sciatica and bursitis
  • Tendonitis and shin splints
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shoulder and knee problems
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Migraines and headaches

Chiropractic Treats More Than Back and Neck Pain

If you are not familiar with chiropractic you may be wondering, how does it work? How can spinal adjustments treat symptoms that may occur in the foot, for example? All movement and function in the human body flows through the spine. All nerve functions flow through the spinal cord, as do all messages and impulses from the brain to the body. Misalignment of the vertebrae can lead to musculoskeletal or nerve dysfunction that may be felt in any part of the body. Correcting your back and neck alignment can improve your whole body’s efficiency in movement and function.

In some cases, patients may need multiple treatments before they feel relief. In others, some relief may be instantaneous. Chiropractic Care for Inflammatory Arthritis

Posted on 07.10.17 |

Simply put, inflammatory arthritis is inflammation in your joints. Synovial fluid acts as lubrication in the joint. When synovial fluid becomes inflamed, it thickens. The thickening of synovial fluid is what causes the signs and symptoms associated with arthritis. The reason synovial fluid becomes inflamed isn’t clear. Evidence suggests that genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors all play a role. Non inflammatory arthritis (a misnomer) is also inflammation in the joint. The difference is this inflammation is caused by cartilage breaking down from general wear and tear. Non inflammatory arthritis is usually found in a single joint. The signs and symptoms of inflammatory arthritis can be localized or widespread affecting multiple areas of your body.

Traditional medicines are good, but a holistic approach is often preferable. If you feel your condition requires more than over-the-counter or prescription medication, or you want alternative options for treating arthritis, call 817-767-5430 for a consultation Dr. Doyle today. Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture is located in Roanoke across from Hawaiian Falls.

Types of Arthritis

Inflammatory arthritis encompasses any type of arthritis involving the immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most prevalent form. RA affects more than 2 million people, most of whom are women. RA most often affects the hands, wrist, and feet. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (also known as juvenile RA) occurs in children and adolescents age 16 and under. People who suffer from psoriasis of the skin can develop psoriatic arthritis. Ankylosis Spondylitis results from inflammation in the spine. Other autoimmune diseases such as gout and lupus erythematosus can also lead to inflammatory arthritis.

Symptoms of Arthritis

Symptoms include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness (especially in the mornings), and swelling. As arthritis worsens, limited or total loss of mobility, deformity, and muscle weakness occur. If you suffer from inflammatory arthritis, systematic inflammation can also cause: skin rashes, dry mouth, hair loss, eye inflammation, and fever.

Is Inflammation Causing Your Joint Pain?

Posted on 06.6.17 |

older woman has joint pain in elbowJoint pain can be an irritation and can make completing daily tasks difficult. Inflammation is a common cause of such joint pain. This response is your body’s way of protecting itself when an injury or overuse occurs, but as we age inflammation may cause more pain than we’d like. You can tell if inflammation is the cause because your joints will feel warm to the touch and appear red and swollen. Dr. Cody Doyle in Roanoke, TX has a variety of non-invasive treatment methods for common joint pain. By using chiropractic, acupuncture, and other treatments, he can alleviate your pain and make recommendations on how to reduce future pain.

Inflammation is your immune system’s response to a foreign stimulus. When an unknown stimulus could cause harm, your body creates inflammation in that region as a way to protect itself. Here are three common forms of inflammation that can lead to irritating joint pain.

Inflammatory Arthritis

Arthritis can easily be defined as inflammation of joints. When the white blood cells found in synovial fluid (joint fluid) become inflamed, the protective membrane surrounding your joints can thicken. This thickening damages the cartilage between joints and results in joint pain. This can also cause your joints to lose their shape and misalign. Although the exact cause of inflammatory arthritis is unknown, poor nutrition, genetics, and stress have all been linked to this condition. The most common form of inflammatory arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis. .

Osteoarthritis

Throughout your life, your body will feel the effects of normal wear and tear. The simple routines of life put our bodies through a lot, and over time this can result in osteoarthritis. Cartilage cushions our joints; when it begins to deteriorate, you will experience a feeling of stiffness in your joints. The degeneration of cartilage between your joints can eventually lead to bones rubbing against one another, causing a painful response.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

Another name for this medical disorder is intestinal permeability. Leaky gut syndrome is the result of damage to the lining of the small intestine, causing undigested food, toxins, and bacteria to leak into the blood stream. This can cause a slew of painful symptoms, one of which is joint pain. Joint pain may seem to be unrelated to digestion, but has been linked to inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis, so it’s worth considering as a possible source.

Dr. Doyle’s Non-Invasive Approach

Roanoke, TX chiropractor Dr. Doyle uses a variety of non-invasive treatment methods to manage joint pain. A common method that he will use is myofascial release therapy, which among many other things improves your joint’s range of motion and flexibility. During this therapy, Dr. Doyle will apply pressure to various connective tissues and muscles in your body.

Along with myofascial release, Dr. Doyle will incorporate chiropractic care, acupuncture, and deep muscle stretching. Chiropractic care uses musculoskeletal manipulation to relieve pain and tension found within the body. Acupuncture redirects energy within the body for pain relief and management. These non-invasive approaches will manage your joint pain and alleviate pain in other areas of your body.

Don’t go another day with joint pain; schedule your chiropractic appointment with Roanoke, TX chiropractor Dr. Doyle today to non-invasively manage your pain. Call 817-767-5430.
