Did You Know: Conditions a Chiropractor Can Treat

Posted on 03.4.20 |

conditions chiropractor can treat

Most people realize a chiropractor can help with conditions of the spine, such as neck pain, backaches, and damaged discs. What many patients don’t know, however, is that they can help with many issues not generally thought of as connected to the spine.

Chiropractic care can influences the body’s nervous system, helping to desensitize painful tissues and decrease the overall pain burden on the body. This alternative medicine treatment option can treat many health conditions that may surprise you.

Dr. Cody Doyle has over two decades of experience in successfully treating patients with a multitude of health care issues. Today, he is going to share about five of the most surprising issues chiropractic can treat:

  1. Headaches
  2. Stress and Anxiety
  3. Fibromyalgia
  4. Tight Muscles
  5. Weak Immune System

If you suffer from any of these, consider seeking chiropractic treatment for evidence-based, natural, and holistic relief.

A chiropractor can help with headaches.

Most people get occasional headaches that t described as nagging or dull, but some suffer from frequent, severe headaches. While medications and hiding in a quiet, dark room may bring some relief, there are also additional options.

Research shows us that spinal manipulation effectively treats headaches caused by tension or those that begin in the neck. One study showed that over 70 percent of patients who suffer from migraines experienced “noticeable” or “substantial” relief after treatment with chiropractic care.

The truth is, some headaches are the result of neck dysfunction and neck muscle tension. The majority of headache sufferers spend hours in the same position, such as in front of a TV or computer. Moreover, their job often involves poor posture. This leads to irritation of the joints and tension in the scalp, neck, and upper back.

How can a chiropractor help bring relief?

  • Perform spinal manipulations or manual adjustments to restore normal function to your spine, which alleviates mechanical stress and improves spinal function.
  • Perform acupuncture, which keeps your body balanced and reduces stress and anxiety.
  • Educate you regarding ergonomics and proper posture.
  • Teach you relaxation techniques and exercises that reduce stress and help your body heal.
  • Create a nutritional plan to improve your overall health, which may include adding vitamins or herbs or a change in diet.

Chiropractors can help you reduce stress and anxiety.

Stress, especially when it is prolonged, can wreak havoc on your body. When we experience stress, our brain activates the “fight or flight” reaction by releasing adrenalin and cortisol into the body. This systemic reaction is nature’s way of preparing us to either flee a dangerous situation or stay and fight.

When adrenalin and cortisol flood your body, the result is an increase in blood pressure and heart rate. Moreover, they redirect blood away from the extremities and digestive system, effectively increasing blood volume.

Our bodies are unable to process the cortisol and adrenalin naturally. If we don’t put them to use to actually fight or run, it creates a tremendous strain on your muscles, organs, and nerves.

Frequent or prolonged activation of adrenalin and cortisol surges can be disastrous to your overall health and well-being. It puts you at an increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, muscle damage, and delayed healing from injury and disease. In addition, it can lead to panic attacks, anxiety, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, weight fluctuations, loss of sex drive, and digestive issues.

But what is stress?

There three main sources of stress are our body, our environment, and our emotions.

Stress originating in our body can come from poor nutrition, illness or disease, or injury. It can also come from not getting proper sleep or an improperly functioning organ.

Environmental stresses include weather, noise, pressure regarding performance standards or time constraints, and physical threats.

Emotional stress involves how we react to physical or environmental stress in our thoughts and emotions.

Chiropractic Treatment for Stress Includes:

Chronic stress can lead to neuromusculoskeletal irritation that creates adverse pressure/tension on your neuromusculoskeletal structures, i.e., spinal joints and nerves.

When you have adverse neural tension (ANT), it impedes the nerve signals traveling to the brain from the body and to the body from the brain.

One of the main goals of chiropractic care is to keep the spine and nervous system functioning optimally.  This helps desensitize overly sensitive tissues and nerves, decreasing the pain burden, and leading to more normal function. This also helps the body process and manage stress in a healthier way.

Chiropractic treatment can also improve blood flow and reduce nerve irritation and muscle tension. This helps your body to return to a more relaxed, balanced state, which allows your brain to turn off the adrenalin so your body can heal.

A doctor of chiropractic can also create and suggest a nutritional plan. For instance, the addition of B vitamins helps your body cope with stress.

Moreover, a chiropractor can teach you relaxation techniques and exercises to help your body heal faster.

Chiropractic Treatment for Fibromyalgia

While many people don’t understand what fibromyalgia (FM) is, patients who suffer from it know it is no joke. This chronic disorder involves widespread sensitivity and pain throughout the entire body. This condition also causes disturbances in sleep, which leads to chronic fatigue. Many patients also experience TMJ pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and psychological conditions.

It can be difficult to make an FM diagnosis, but estimates put the number of Americans suffering from this often disabling disorder at around two percent.

Patients with FM are overly sensitive to even slight stimuli and report a pain response to things not normally painful. Since our nervous system communicates information from the outside world, many believe the root cause is a central nervous system disorder.

How does chiropractic care help?

Few FM patients are able to find relief for all their symptoms. Several studies have shown, however, that many report improvement with chiropractic treatment. One study revealed that up to 60 percent of patients reported “significant improvement” with reduced pain, decreased fatigue, and improved sleep.

One of the main focuses of chiropractic training involves the positive impact chiropractic care has on the nervous system.

Moreover, Dr. Doyle is a Board-Certified Chiropractic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Specialist. This means he has received an education far above chiropractic school and has passed rigorous board examinations. This designation puts him in the top two percent of all doctors of chiropractic.

Dr. Doyle is highly trained in both the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. When you choose treatment with him, you can trust that he knows how to help. Chiropractic care can treat pressure points, neck and back pain, shoulder pain, and headaches. It also improves the nervous system, allowing FM patients an improved chance for recovery.

Moreover, spinal adjustments increase mobility between the joints of the spine. This helps loosen restrictions and improves the overall range of motion.

Chiropractic care loosens tight muscles.

As we age, we tend to lose the flexibility and range of motion we once enjoyed. Each year, this repetitive trauma accumulates in the wear and tear of your body.

Losses in range of motion and flexibility can interfere with our ability to do things we once did with ease. Over time, even simple tasks, such as tying your shoes or picking something up off the ground, can become difficult.

As tasks and chores become more difficult and painful, we tend to avoid these activities. Maybe you have heard the saying, “Use it or lose it.” When we don’t exercise regularly, our joints and muscles stiffen. If we don’t work at correcting this, it can lead to adhesions, scar tissue, and the loss of alternative movement strategies.

Regular chiropractic care, however, improves range of motion and flexibility. Joint manipulations, including those to the spine as well as other parts of the body, provide a novel sensory stimulus that acts to improve otherwise limited movements. This helpt to breaks adhesions, reduces pain, improves coordination and balance, and allows your body to function more normally.

In addition, he can teach you specific exercises to perform at home. This will help you build upon and maintain the benefits of treatment.

Chiropractic care can boost your immune system.

The immune system, endocrine system, and nervous system are all interlinked and rely on each other for proper function. When one system is not working effectively, it negatively affects the other systems.

When spinal joints are dysfunctional, they can cause sensitization to nerve pathways. This can result in “central sensitization” and ultimately cause increased susceptibility to all types of stressors. It also causes the endocrine system to release the stress hormone cortisol, which further reduces the effectiveness of the immune system.

Chiropractic treatments can help to desensitize the nervous system and reduce neuromusculoskeletal compression and irritation. This, in turn, boosts the responses of the immune system.

What happens during a chiropractic adjustment?

Chiropractic Adjustments

Myths regarding chiropractic treatment abound. Most are spread by those who have never experienced the benefits of treatment. Others come from doctors who don’t understand the discipline.

Maybe you have heard adjustments are painful? Or that the popping sounds come from your bones cracking?

Some people insist chiropractors aren’t real doctors and that treatments don’t help. Others say that once you start, you have to keep going to receive any benefits. Many believe chiropractic care is only for acute low back pain.

Here, Dr. Cody Doyle, a board-certified chiropractic orthopedist, and Fellow of the International Academy of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, who’s been successfully treating patients for over two decades, will debunk some of the most common myths. He will also discuss what happens during chiropractic adjustments and explain the benefits of treatment.

The Philosophy and Goals of Chiropractic Care

To understand the benefits of chiropractic care, it helps to understand the philosophy and goals. The discipline of chiropractic healthcare emphasizes the restoration of movement and function, without the use of surgery or drugs. Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between function and structure in all parts of the body.

The nervous system coordinates the function of every organ and cell in the body. The main part of the nervous system is the spinal cord and the surrounding nerves.

The most crucial structure concerning chiropractic care involves the spine, which surrounds and protects the spinal cord. Many things can cause the spine to become dysfunctional, including poor posture, damaged disks, inflammation, injury, and/or weak and imbalanced muscles. Spinal dysfunction arises when the bones of the spine, called vertebrae, become limited in their motion or begin to move abnormally.

A dysfunctional spine can cause adverse tension on nerves and can cause the nerves and associated muscles to become overly sensitive (sometimes called neural sensitization). The result can include anything from back or neck pain to headaches, nerve pain, and fatigue.

Chiropractors understand the impact a dysfunctional spine can have on the body. Therefore, they focus on repairing the relationship between the function (the nervous system) and structure (the vertebrae of the spine or joints of the body). These can affect the overall restoration and preservation of health.

In addition, a good chiropractor recognizes the value of working with other health care professions. This is especially true when it is in the patient’s best interest.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

One of the main jobs of a chiropractor is to restore the function of the spine and/or peripheral joints (knees, shoulder, hips, etc.)  to their proper function through spinal and/or extraspinal manipulation.

Chiropractic adjustments involve gentle, controlled force to mobilize the joint space at spinal (or extraspinal) joints. Most often, this is achieved through the use of the chiropractor’s hands. However, sometimes a tool, such as an activator or arthrostim, is utilized to achieve the desired outcome without force.

Usually, treatment involves mobilizing the entire spine, including the lower back, mid-back, upper back, and neck.

The best chiropractors customize your treatment plan based on your unique needs. He will also consider your situation and symptoms. Your plan may involve a combination of complementary and alternative medicine options.

Numerous techniques can be utilized, and chiropractic care involves art and skill. A chiropractor should know when and how to apply adjustments.

Therefore, it is important to receive treatment from a chiropractor like Dr. Doyle. You want someone experienced with all treatment methods and options. The best treatment plan involves the knowledge and experience to know which option is best for you.

Chiropractic adjustments involve a procedure in which a trained specialist (a chiropractor) uses manipulations of the spine. These manipulations improve function and spinal mobility by properly removing restrictions from the spine and associated soft tissues.

Do my bones crack during adjustments?

During chiropractic adjustments, you may hear a popping or cracking noise. A common myth is that this sound is related to your bones cracking.

Actually, these sounds occur due to the release of gasses from between the vertebrae. This happens when fixated or restricted spinal joints are mobilized. The gasses include carbon dioxide, oxygen, and nitrogen.

Sometimes the popping sound does not occur. This is normal and simply means that the gasses with the joint capsule had not reached the level necessary to produce an audible sound. The “pop” sound is not necessary or required to achieve a successful treatment.

How do adjustments help?

Once your spine is moving more normally, you will notice more freedom of movement and other symptoms like muscle spasm and muscular aches will also improve.

The restored function allows for improved range of motion, reduced nerve irritation, and muscle relaxation.

In addition, chiropractic adjustments send a signal to the brain to release endorphins. These are the body’s natural painkiller. Endorphins produce a feeling of euphoria similar to opioids, and their release in the body provides patients with relief of pain.

Is everyone a candidate?

Chiropractic care is not for everyone. While many patients with acute and chronic pain do benefit, certain patients may not be the best candidates.

Dr. Doyle will perform a thorough examination and will ensure that you can safely receive chiropractic care before beginning treatment.

Patients with the following issues may not be a candidate for chiropractic management.

  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Cancer of the spine
  • High risk of stroke and/or bleeding disorders

Is a chiropractor a real doctor?

Training to become a Doctor of Chiropractic involves a lot of work. It begins with a four-year undergraduate degree. Most students take many of the same classes and earn the same bachelor’s degrees as medical doctors.

Next, the student attends another four or five years of graduate work at a chiropractic school. Upon completion, they must take and pass state and national board examinations.

The biggest difference between chiropractic schools and medical schools is the focus.

Medical doctors focus on treating unhealthy conditions with things like prescription medications and surgery. Chiropractors, however, focus on healthy living and proper function of the body. The goal is to remove the obstacles that prevent the human body from functioning optimally. And spinal alignment is critical to achieving optimal function.

Dr. Doyle has 23 years of experience as a Chiropractor. In addition to his education to become a chiropractor, Dr. Cody Doyle is a Board-Certified Chiropractic Orthopedist, and a  Diplomate and Fellow of the International Academy of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, formerly the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedist. He has been in private practice since opening his first clinic in his hometown of North Richland Hills, Texas in 1998. Dr. Doyle is driven to help patients reach their full potential with knowledgeable and proactive chiropractic support. As a board-certified neuromusculoskeletal specialist, he is proficient in all areas of the body’s neuromusculoskeletal system and methods for improving function, sensorimotor control, and reducing both chronic and acute pain.

Will I need chiropractic care forever?

Patients with acute issues, such as pain from an injury or accident, usually receive relief with just a few visits. Most patients receive optimal improvement in six to ten visits. However, someone with complicating factors, “red flags”, or a chronic condition may require ongoing treatment for continued relief.

Patients who receive relief with improved function may find “as needed” treatments necessary to stay healthy and achieve maximum benefits.

What to Expect with Chiropractic Care

During your consultation, the chiropractor should perform a thorough physical examination, including any necessary diagnostic testing, such as x-rays. They should also gather information about your medical history and medications. Additional testing, such as CT scans or MRI, may also be ordered, depending on your symptoms and mechanism of injury.

Once your chiropractor has determined your diagnosis, he should create a customized treatment plan based on your unique symptoms and needs. This may include chiropractic care, acupuncture, myofascial release therapy, or other complementary treatment options.

For chiropractic treatment, your chiropractor will place you in specific positions so he can treat your affected areas. Most often, this involves a face-down position on a padded table specifically designed for chiropractic treatments.

The chiropractor will then use manual adjustments or a special tool to treat your spinal joints.

After adjustments, many patients report immediate relief. However, some patients require a few treatments to notice results. Some patients may take a few weeks before beginning to progress. Usually, this involves chronic pain patients who exhibit neurologic adaptations due to long-standing pain and spinal dysfunction.

A few patients do report some minor side effects after treatment, which may include fatigue, headache, soreness, or even increased pain. These issues may occur within the first few hours and usually don’t last longer than 24 hours. For most patients, rest, ice, or non-prescription medications are all that is needed to alleviate any side effects.

What can a chiropractor do for headaches?

Posted on 01.7.20 |

What Can a Chiropractor Do For Headaches

Do you suffer from frequent headaches?

While headaches are a common complaint, there are many different types. They can also be complex to diagnose.

Fortunately, Dr. Cody Doyle has over two decades of successfully treating patients with headaches. Thanks to his insatiable curiosity and intense love of research, he has discovered treatment protocols that work, no matter what type you have.

In this article, we will discuss the common causes of headaches, different types of headaches, and treatment options to help rid you of your pain.

What causes headaches?

While there are several types of headaches, the causes can be quite varied. Fortunately, very few headaches indicate a serious illness.

Often, problems with or overactivity of pain-sensitive structures can cause them. Usually, the many structures surrounding your neck and skull, such as muscles, nerves, and joints, play a role.

Some patients have triggers that bring them on.

Common triggers include:

  • Certain foods, such as chocolate and processed meat
  • Alcohol, especially red wine
  • Poor posture
  • Excessive stress or tension
  • Sinus infection or allergies
  • Lack of sleep
  • Missed meals
  • Menstruation or hormones

In addition, pain in the head can be referred pain. For instance, a cervicogenic headache is actually referred pain from soft tissues or bony structures of the neck. This can include muscles, nerves, or cervical spine joints.

In fact, spinal misalignment in the neck and even the upper back is very often the cause. Spinal adjustments can offer effective help.

How can a chiropractor help?

While something serious is rarely the cause of headaches, you should seek evaluation if you experience them frequently.

Dr. Doyle will perform a thorough examination, including medical history and x-rays. If there is anything to suggest something that requires immediate attention, he will let you know. If he has any concerns, he will refer you for additional testing.

During the examination, Dr. Doyle will discuss your symptoms with you and work to figure out where the pain is coming from.

After examination, Dr. Doyle will answer any questions and discuss your treatment options. Together, you will create an individualized treatment plan that is best for your unique needs, symptoms, and desires.

What type of headaches do you suffer from?

Patients use the term headache to describe any type of pain experienced in the head. However, there are several different types, and they can range in severity and frequency. Understanding which type of headache you suffer from is helpful.

Tension Headache

Usually the least severe, a tension headache is the most common type. Often it is a pain that is “just there,” nagging at you, but you can still perform daily activities. Mostly dull in nature, tension headaches can reside on one or both sides of the head.

Improving your posture, getting your rest, eating well, managing stress, and regular spinal adjustments should take care of your nagging pain.

Sinus Headache

Allergies and infection in the sinus cavities can cause pressure to build behind your cheeks, nose, forehead, and throughout your face. If you experience congestion, a runny nose, facial swelling, or increased pain when you lean forward, you likely have a sinus headache.

Dr. Doyle offers his patients excellent relief from sinus headaches with acupuncture. This alternative treatment effectively reduces pressure and inflammation.

Cluster Headache

If you experience short bursts of pain on one side of the head, you may be having cluster headaches. These bursts of pain are often followed by nasal congestion and watery eyes. The pain can be as severe as a migraine, but they are not as debilitating since they are short in duration.

While the cause of cluster headaches is unknown, Dr. Doyle has brought relief to many patients suffering from them through routine acupuncture and spinal manipulations.

Migraine Headache

Migraines can be very debilitating and interfere with your quality of life and daily activities. The pain is intense and can be on one or both sides of the head. Typically described as throbbing, it can last from several hours to days. Migraines typically come with the added symptoms of sensitivity to sound and light and nausea and vomiting.

Some patients with migraines also experience what is known as an aura. Often, this includes flashes of light that occur in the peripheral vision before the migraine begins.

Since many patients suffer from migraines due to triggers, you will want to keep notes about lifestyle habits and diet. Avoidance of any potential triggers is highly advisable.

In addition, Dr. Doyle can help prevent future migraines with routine acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments.

Isn’t it time to get rid of your headaches?

Which is Better for Neck Pain–a Chiropractor or Masseuse

Posted on 12.2.19 |

It has been estimated that one in three people suffer from or have experienced neck pain significant enough to seek treatment at least once a year. Many of these patients seek alternative treatment options from a chiropractor or masseuse.

At Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture in Roanoke, TX, neck pain is a common complaint for many of our patients. Dr. Cody Doyle has over two decades of experience in successfully treating patients suffering from neck pain. His treatment options are non-invasive, non-addictive, and drug-free.

chiropractor or masseuse for neck pain

What can a chiropractor do for neck pain?

As a chiropractor, Dr. Doyle offers several alternative treatment options. This includes acupuncture, myofascial release therapy, ultrasound therapy, and muscle stimulation. The most common treatment he performs, however, is spinal manipulation—also known as spinal adjustment.

With spinal manipulations, the chiropractor uses his hands or a special adjustment tool to loosen and adjust spinal joints. By applying sudden but controlled force to joints, he returns your vertebra to proper alignment. This helps treat joint, muscle, and nerve pain. This treatment relieves the pain caused by numerous factors, such as a pinched nerve or muscle spasms. It can also relieve pain associated with tissue inflammation or scarring caused by repetitive stress, such as consistent poor ergonomics or posture, or from trauma, such as with whiplash.

The spine acts as an extension of the nervous system, which communicates with all the muscles. Therefore, spinal health is extremely important for your overall well-being.

Many chiropractors will also teach you exercises to perform at home to help keep your joints loose.

Some chiropractors, like Dr. Doyle, also offer acupuncture. This is an effective way to reduce inflammation and pain. It also tricks your body into releasing endorphins, which are your body’s natural painkillers.

Another potential treatment option a chiropractor may suggest is myofascial release therapy. With this treatment, Dr. Doyle stretches or massages the myofascial connective tissue that surrounds muscles and bones. Different from massage, this is steady, prolonged (three to five minutes) pressure to targeted areas. This releases restrictions in connective tissues. The result is increased range of motion and decreased pain.

What can a masseuse do for neck pain?

A masseuse, or a licensed massage therapist, can help relieve pain by applying kneading and stroking motions to muscle groups and soft tissues. This is usually accompanied by lubricants or oils to allow the therapist to slide their hands over the skin. The result is muscle stimulation and relaxation, which can promote healing and temporarily reduce pain.

While massage can help alleviate muscular pain, it is not typically used to treat pain with the joints, spine, or tendons. The benefits come from mood enhancement, increased energy, and relaxation.

Massage therapy is most beneficial for those experiencing daily stressors, such as tired, tense, or achy muscles caused by odd sleeping positions or exercise.

Treatment usually lasts 30-60 minutes and can help reduce “knots” in the muscles. While it can promote a sense of relaxation and peacefulness, it does not address connective tissue pain.

Is a chiropractor or masseuse best for your neck pain?

The answer depends on your unique desires and needs.

If you have pain from “knots” in your muscles or experience soreness from exercise or prolonged activity, a masseuse may be all you need. Massage can relieve tension and promote relaxation, which can provide relief. However, repeated and routine massages may be required for continued relief.

If you suffer from chronic pain or pain associated with a misaligned spine, treatment from a chiropractor is your best option. This treatment restores joint mobility and aims to fix the source of your pain rather than just treating symptoms.

Not sure which treatment is best for you? Talk with your doctor to discuss which option could be most beneficial.

Exercise the pain away in and around Roanoke!

Posted on 07.15.19 |

couple exercising the pain away in local parkWhen struggling with back pain, most people tend to think that “resting my back” is the best option, but in reality sitting on the couch has the opposite effect. Too much rest allows muscles to weaken, tighten, and deteriorate. Muscles in the back need to be active unless they are torn or otherwise injured. Exercise is all about strengthening, stretching, and improving overall health.

As a chiropractor, Dr. Doyle often prescribes daily exercise to help reduce pain and discomfort, long term. If you want to explore drug-free treatments for pain relief, call Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture today at 817-767-5430.

A walk around the block or a few miles on the treadmill every day can get monotonous (but if you like it, don’t change it). If you find that working out by yourself seems uninspiring and unmotivating, you’re likely to stay on the couch watching Netflix. Exercise can be fun, believe it or not. In Roanoke and Trophy Club, you have access to many awesome parks with trees, amenities, and like-minded neighbors—and admission is cheaper than Netflix.

Walking, Jogging, or Running

Cardio will make your spine, and you, happy! Just a 30-minute walk or run triggers the release of endorphins—the happy hormone—to boost your mood. For those who love to run, don’t forget that running posture matters! Find out what that looks like here.

When cardio becomes a part of your daily routine, it helps the body stay comfortable doing everyday tasks, like tying shoes, walking upstairs, or playing with your kids and grandkids. So, grab a friend (even the four-legged variety) and start walking at any of these places near you:

  1. Cannon Parkway Park

Along with playground equipment, splash pad, basketball courts, and many other amenities, this park has a paved walking trail that is a little more than half a mile long. If you only want a short walk, shoot some hoops and cool off at the splash pad before heading home. A skateboard and BMX park is next to the sand volleyball courts. Hangout and get to know your neighbors while you’re there. There are public restrooms, as well–always a bonus. Our office is just across the street!

  1. Roanoke Community Park

Roanoke Community Park is full of activities for the whole family. The main entertainment is watching baseball and softball, but the park has much more to offer. Enjoy a scenic half-mile walk around the pond and bring your fishing gear. The pond features a pier that’s great for kids and adults alike. Picnic tables and restrooms are onsite, as well.

  1. Trophy Club Park

Not a fan of walking or running? How about disc golf? Trophy Club park features an 18-hole course, in addition to the woods around Grapevine Lake, which provide excellent hiking and horseback riding opportunities. Geocaching and fishing are also fun activities that this park offers. https://www.trophyclub.org/475/Trophy-Club-Park

Water Aerobics

For gentle resistance training, water aerobics is one of the best choices. This low-impact workout gets the blood flowing in your spine, which helps restore and strengthen your back, shoulders, hips, and neck. Many techniques focus on arms and legs, as well. You can try water aerobics on your own at Roanoke Community Pool or Trophy Club Pool. For instruction, check out this YouTube video that shows three water aerobics exercises for abdominal workouts.

Pilates Classes

Pilates is a great workout for strengthening core muscles which, in turn, help relieve back pain. When the core is strong, the body is more balanced and the back has more support. Starting a new exercise can be damaging if you jump in too quickly, so try these easy Pilates workouts and basic movements before pushing your body too far!

If you and Dr. Doyle decide that Pilates is a good match for you, consider joining any of these Pilates studios in the Roanoke area:

  1. Foreverfit Pilates Studio in Trophy Club
  2. Purely Pilates Center in Southlake
  3. C3 Pilates in Keller

To learn more about how Pilates helps strengthen core and back muscles and which exercises are best for managing pain, click here. There are also many YouTube videos and television shows that can guide you through yoga and Pilates exercises at home, at no cost. A little online research will help you find a favorite for your unique needs.

How to Reduce the Pain of Scoliosis

Posted on 06.26.19 |

woman with scoliosis working the pain awayWhat is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a genetic condition that causes an “S” curve in the spine. The curvature can be either mild or severe, but it can cause back pain and discomfort. Pain pills, like NSAIDs and opiates, aren’t your only option when it comes to dealing with back pain; they aren’t even the best option. Meeting with Dr. Doyle to talk about chiropractic care and acupuncture is the first of many steps you can take to help improve your life.

Although everyone with scoliosis has a different experience, there are things that you should do, and things that you shouldn’t do, to help manage pain and discomfort.

What You Should Do to Help Scoliosis

1. Work out daily.

Something as simple as walking a mile every day can make a huge difference. Strengthening the muscles in your back will help relieve pain and improve posture. Here are some exercises to start with:

    1. Arm/leg raise
    2. Pelvic tilt
    3. Cat and cow stretch (spine)
    4. Latissimus stretch (upper back)

Try these and feel the difference! You can find pictures of these exercises here.

2. Dance and play soccer!

Scoliosis shouldn’t keep anyone from the activities they love. If you love playing sports, find one that is low impact, like soccer or golf. If you love dancing, try to avoid overdoing it with backbends, but keep dancing!

3. Sleep the right way.

What you choose to sleep on matters–especially if you have back problems. If you’re a stomach sleeper, we’ve got some bad news: it’s killing your back! Laying on the bed for 6-9 hours can really help or really hurt your back.

You can purchase special pillows to use under your neck and legs, or between your legs if you sleep on your side. Raising your legs with a pillow will reduce pressure on the low back. Keeping the curvature of your neck intact with a pillow can help relieve morning neck pain.

Many people with scoliosis prefer to sleep on their side with a pillow between their knees because it keeps their spine in a more natural position or on their backs because their weight is evenly distributed across their body. If sleeping on their stomach is inevitable, it is recommended to place a pillow under the pelvis.

Also, try a mattress that is more firm for support. You will eventually find what makes it easier for you to get out of bed in the morning.

4. Try acupuncture and chiropractic care.

All of these things combined with acupuncture and chiropractic care can help stop scoliosis from deteriorating quality of life and can even help retrain the spine. Dr. Doyle is trained and equipped in musculoskeletal manipulation and acupuncture. In some cases, these drug-free, natural therapies help relieve pain. Chiropractic may also improve your comfort by retraining your spine to a healthier curvature.

What You Shouldn’t Do to Help Scoliosis

1. Don’t wear stilettos.

Depending on the severity of your condition, those extremely tall, cute stiletto heels may be the cause of a lot of pain. Opt for low-heeled shoes with good arch support. Going barefoot is also a bad idea. Solid arch support benefits for your feet, as well as your spine.

2. Don’t participate in certain sports.

Competitive swimming and football are two of the worst sports for your back. Swimming laps for hours daily can cause the curvature of the spine to progress. Because football is a high-contact sport, players can experience all kinds of injuries, the effects of which can show up years later. For scoliosis patients, sudden impact can have devastating results.

3. Don’t avoid chiropractic care.

The worst thing you can do is to put off treatment. Chiropractic care has been proven to reduce pain and inflammation and improve flexibility and range of motion. Though some people doubt the effectiveness of chiropractic, its results have been repeatedly proven by medical science. Dr. Doyle has extensive training and continues to study the latest developments in chiropractic care.

One of the major benefits of chiropractic is that it doesn’t just treat the symptoms like pain killers do, it treats the problem. Don’t wait any longer to get the help you need for your back pain. Take the first step and contact Dr. Doyle’s Roanoke, Tx office today at 817-767-5430 to set up a one-hour, comprehensive consultation and evaluation. The office is convenient to Trophy Club, Keller, and Justin.

3 Tips to Help Relieve Low Back Pain by Roanoke-Trophy Club Chiropractor Dr. Cody Doyle

woman with low back pain

Over 80% of people have experienced low back pain in their life. If you experience frequent or chronic pain, there are options. Find out how to reduce your pain by simply improving your sleeping habits and stretching and learn the secret about a powerful all-natural painkiller.

Low Back Pain And Poor Sleeping Habits

Pain can interfere with a good night’s rest, and awkward sleeping postures can exacerbate your pain. Minimize the amount of pressure and stress placed on your back through the strategic use of pillows. Alignment is key. Your ears, shoulders, and hips should be lined up to maintain the natural curve of your spine.

Side-sleepers should put a pillow between the knees to maintain spinal alignment. Another option is the fetal position—drawing your knees to your chest. This increases the spaces between the vertebrae. To continue proper alignment, your head pillow should fill the space between your ear and shoulder.

Stomach-sleepers should put a pillow under the abdomen and pelvis to relieve the pressure and stress off the back. For proper alignment of the neck, try a thin pillow under your forehead so you can sleep facedown rather than have your head twisted to the side.

Sleeping on your back is the best, as it evenly distributes the weight of your body and minimizes pressure points. To keep the natural curve of your spine, place a pillow under your knees. If you have an adjustable bed, a reclined position is best. For neck positioning, you want a flat pillow under your head.

Don’t neglect the importance of your mattress. While a soft bed feels nice, it’s bad for your back. You want a firm or medium-firm mattress with quality springs or foam. If you need a new one and can’t afford it, try a mattress topper. If the mattress is too soft, put plywood under it.

Low Back Pain Relief Stretches

Tight muscles increase tension and worsen pain. For low back pain, the hamstrings are the most common culprit. These muscles go through the back of the thighs from hips to knees. Proper stretching lengthens the muscles, reducing tension and increasing range of motion and mobility.

Consistency is key. This isn’t something you force in a few days. Perform gentle, smooth stretching. Don’t bounce or go for pain, as this can tear your muscles. If it hurts, back off a bit, then hold the stretch for 30 seconds. Perform this one side at a time and repeat four times. Done twice daily, this routine will enhance coordination and reduce pain and stress.

Powerful All-Natural Pain Relief

Endorphins are amazing. They are the brain’s chemicals that, when released, reduce pain and stress and improve the immune system. Endorphins are the naturally occurring “feel good” painkillers we have free access to. When released, endorphins produce euphoria. This happens naturally when we feel pain, such as with an injury, but there are other ways to activate these powerful neurotransmitters.

Studies have proven endorphin’s power in the “runner’s high,” but the stress running puts on the back may not be best for someone already experiencing pain. The good news is, there are many other ways to get the endorphins pumping. Any type of cardiovascular exercise, such as biking or fast-walking, will do the trick. It has been shown that shared experiences are effective. Water aerobics with friends, yoga in a class, or dancing with that special someone are examples.

Other ways to boost endorphins include laughter, music, dark chocolate, and vanilla or lavender. Spicy foods also work. The burning sensation in the mouth triggers pain signals. Go ahead, add wasabi or cayenne peppers to your food for not only a burst of flavor but a boost of bliss. Volunteering and lending a helping hand produce pleasure, connection, and trust. MRI studies have shown the act of giving produces a “helper’s high.”

But My Back Still Hurts

If the above options don’t give the relief you hoped for, additional measures may be warranted. With over 21 years’ experience, Dr. Cody Doyle can help with a treatment customized for you. He provides not only chiropractic care but acupuncture, an effective way of enticing your brain to flood your body with endorphins.

Spotting the Signs of Degenerative Disc Disease

Posted on 11.30.18 |

Spotting the Signs of Degenerative Disc DiseaseThe human spine contains 23 spinal discs. These ligaments provide cushioning for the spine’s boney vertebrae and keep the back aligned and flexible. Often, when patients complain of a painful, sore, or aching back, issues with spinal discs are to blame. Degenerative disc disease refers to the condition when damaged or aging spinal discs cause pain or discomfort.

If you are experiencing back, neck or shoulder pain, schedule a consultation with Dr. Doyle. At Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture, we offer a range of treatments that can help alleviate painful symptoms naturally. Call our Roanoke office at 817-767-5430 and take the first step in reducing back pain today!

Causes of Degenerative Disc Disease

As you age, it’s normal for cushiony, water-filled spinal discs to begin drying out and flattening. This means less shock absorption between each of your vertebrae. Sometimes, the outer wall of a spinal disc can crack, causing a herniated disc. Other times, a spinal disc will shift out of place. All these problems can cause degenerative disc disease symptoms. While age is usually the top cause for degenerative disc disease, other causes can include obesity, lack of exercise, injury, or repetitive physical activity.

Several symptoms can alert you to whether your back pain could be associated with degenerative disc disease:

Pain Intensifies When Sitting

When seated, spinal discs in the lower back have up to three times more pressure on them than when standing. With degenerative disc disease, back pain is usually alleviated or reduced when walking or moving positions, because of the immediate pressure release that happens when a patient stands.

Greater Discomfort When Twisting the Back, Bending Over or Lifting Heavy Objects

Your spinal discs are layered between bony vertebrae, so when you twist or bend, damaged discs cannot absorb the shock or pressure from vertebrae as effectively. Lifting heavy objects puts additional strain on your back muscles and spine, and can pinch vertebrae closer together.

Dull to Debilitating Pain that Comes and Goes

Degenerative disc disease is characterized by waves of pain. The pain period may last days or weeks, and can vary in intensity throughout.

Pain Concentrated in the Lower Back, Upper Thighs or Buttocks

The lower spine becomes compacted with long periods of sitting, and usually endures the most amount of pressure during day-to-day activities. However, pain can be located in the neck, depending where the problem disc is located. In that case, pain or numbness will radiate to shoulders and arms.

Numbness, Tingling or Weakness in Back or Extremities.

Sensations of tingling or numb arms or legs, or a feeling of weakness in the area around the spine are symptoms of a pinched nerve. Pinched nerves can occur when herniated or out of place discs put pressure on surrounding nerves.

Relief with Chiropractic Care

Dr. Doyle can help relieve many of the symptoms associated with degenerative disc disease. He can determine whether your symptoms are coming from aging, herniated, or shifted discs that are blocking the spine’s natural mechanics or pressing on spinal nerves. Dr. Doyle will examine your range of motion, noting when movements are uncomfortable, and examine for evidence of inflammation or injury. If degenerative disc disease is causing your pain, Dr. Doyle could use a combination of treatments, including chiropractic adjustments or myofascial release therapy to align your spine and increase circulation to help reduce painful symptoms.

Could you have a pinched nerve?

Posted on 11.13.18 |

Could you have a pinched nerve?Your body contains billions of nerve cells, called neurons. They’re constantly sending messages to your brain through electrical signals carried by the vast nervous system network. With so many neurons in your body, it’s no surprise that occasional nerve pain and discomfort can occur with daily activities. Long hours sitting at your desk, starting a new exercise routine, or sleeping in an uncomfortable position can all lead to pressure on your nerves. In some cases, pain is caused by a pinched nerve, an uncomfortable condition that can sometimes be treated with chiropractic care.

If you suffer from pinched nerve symptoms, schedule an appointment at Doyle Chiropractic and Acupuncture. Dr. Doyle offers a range of treatments that help a body heal naturally. Contact our Roanoke office at 817-767-5430 to schedule your next appointment.

What is a pinched nerve?

Nerves are surrounded by muscles, ligaments, cartilage, and bones. If these tissues expand and move out of their proper alignment in the body, they can put pressure on nearby nerves. Tight muscles, inflammation, bony spurs, and displaced cartilage or spinal discs can all cause this pinching effect. Nerves respond by sending distress signals to the brain. Your brain can interpret this signal in different ways, but patients may feel:

  • Weak or tired muscles
  • Pain or discomfort that radiates outward
  • Tingling sensations, sometimes described as “pins and needles”
  • Muscle aches

Nerve pinching often happens in places where bones or ligaments closely surround nerves. The type of discomfort felt varies, depending on the nerve’s location. If located in your upper spine, a pinched nerve could lead to headaches, a dull ache in your neck and shoulders, or reduced mobility when turning your head. In the lower spine, pinched nerves often come from herniated or misaligned spinal discs. This can lead to sciatica, a condition characterized by lower back pain, hip pain, and tingling sensations radiating down one or both legs.

How can a chiropractor help me feel better?

While pinched nerve pain can dissipate with rest, you don’t have to live with the discomfort. Chiropractic may help you find faster relief from symptoms.

Chiropractic Adjustments: Dr. Doyle will examine the affected area and assess for any spinal misalignment. By re-aligning your spine through controlled chiropractic adjustments, Dr. Doyle can help alleviate pressure on nerves and improve circulation.

Home Exercise Programs: Simple, at-home stretches and exercises strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles that cause undue pressure on nerves. Stronger, more agile muscles are less likely to allow pinched nerves in the future.

Premodulated Muscle Stimulation: This treatment mimics your nerves’ electrical signals and may reduce the affected area’s aches or soreness. Dr. Doyle applies small electrodes around the affected site to pass safe electrical currents through the skin and into deep muscle tissues. The electrical impulses improve circulation in the affected area and may quicken your body’s natural healing process.

Myofascial Release Therapy: To improve the affected area’s blood flow and range of motion, Dr. Doyle offers hands-on treatment to manipulate the connective tissues surrounding muscle. Effective massage and stretching techniques provide pain relief associated with tired or tight muscles.

If radiating aches and pains or tingling sensations from a pinched nerve are affecting your quality of life, schedule an appointment with Dr. Doyle. He helps patients just like you, in the Roanoke and Trophy Club area, regain mobility with comprehensive acupuncture, chiropractic, and complementary treatments. Contact us now at 817-767-5430.

Roanoke TX neck and shoulder painDo you suffer from chronic pain in the neck, back, or shoulder? Are you tired of relying on painkillers that don’t even work that well? Have all your doctor’s visits still not solved your problem? If so, you might find relief with complementary therapies with Dr. Cody Doyle. Many patients with chronic pain in the back, neck, or shoulder find themselves resigned to their conditions, but there are solutions you may not have been offered by your primary care provider. Chiropractic and complementary therapies may offer you the chance to heal your condition and prevent the pain from returning.

Chronic Pain Problem? Dr. Cody Doyle Has Pain Solutions

Conventional medical care is great for many problems, but chronic pain is often the result of years of biomechanical dysfunction. Poor posture, improper use, overuse, or past injuries can leave you with joints that may feel permanently broken and muscles that have forgotten how to function properly. If you feel like you’ve already tried everything and your pain hasn’t lessened, you may find relief with one of the following therapies:

Chiropractic Treatments

The joints of the spine are incredibly easy to pull out of proper alignment. This can lead to problems in other parts of the body as well as nerve pathway malfunction. With small adjustments to your spinal alignment, chiropractic treatments can help make your body function the way it’s supposed to.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Back, neck, and shoulder pain can often be caused by damaged tissues that have forgotten how to function correctly. This therapy uses stretching, massage, and stimulation of the connective tissues to encourage healing and proper blood flow to malfunctioning areas.

Premodulated Muscle Stimulation

Sometimes referred to as premodulated current physical therapy, this treatment uses mild electrical stimulation to reduce muscle spasms, discomfort, and swelling on soft tissue and muscle injuries.

Acupuncture Treatment

Using safe, painless application of very fine needles, Dr. Doyle uses this centuries-old mainstay of Eastern medicine to gently stimulate nerve pathways at strategic points on the body. Acupuncture is a great way to stimulate tissues and encourage the body to heal itself by natural means.

Physical Therapy

Shoulder and neck pain are often the result of improper lifting, repeated motions, and bad posture. Physical therapy exercises can help retrain the body to use the right muscles and movement patterns needed for proper function and reduced pain.

Ultrasound Therapy

Therapeutic ultrasound therapy can reduce muscle pain and increase range of motion by delivering deep heat to the underlying impaired muscles and connective tissues. As a complement to physical therapy, ultrasound therapy treats muscles, tendons, joints, and ligaments.
